Good oral hygiene is of extreme importance if you want healthy teeth and gums. Healthy teeth enables you to look and feel good, while giving you the confidence to get closer to someone when speaking. Daily preventive care such as brushing and flossing helps to stop oral problems from developing, yet may not be enough if you are doing it incorrectly. Here are a few techniques that will ensure that you get the best results out of your daily routine:
Brush your teeth twice a day for a period of 2 to 3 minutes.
Tilt the brush at a 45 degree angle and gently sweep the brush over the gum line. Move the brush back and forth in tooth-wide strokes, on both sides of the tooth, allowing each tooth to be individually cleaned. Then brush your tongue to freshen your breath and remove bacteria.
Floss after every meal
Break off 18 inches of dental floss and wind it around both your middle fingers, then hold it tightly between your thumb and index fingers. Place the floss between your teeth and gently rub the floss against the tooth. When the floss reaches the gum line, gently slide it between the gum and the tooth.
Once you are done flossing between your tooth and gums, move the floss towards the contact point of your teeth. Do this with all of your teeth, on either side of the tooth.
Rinse your mouth with mouthwash
Rinsing your mouth after you brush and floss increases the cleanliness of your mouth. Pour 10 to 20ml of mouthwash into your mouth and move it around your teeth with a swishing motion for 30 seconds, before spitting it out. Fluoride mouthwash helps to prevent and reduce tooth decay, while antimicrobial mouthwash reduces bacteria and plaque. When purchasing a mouthwash for your family, be sure to read the manufacturer’s label as not all mouthwashes are recommended for children under the age of 6 years.
