It’s important to note that teeth whitening is the first part of cosmetic dentistry, is cost effective, and can have a tremendous positive impact on enhancing the colour of the teeth. It’s also important to know that it needs to be utilised in safe way, while getting the best possible results. There are many products on the market, and not all of them have the same effectivity rate. We utilise Britesmile, which is an internationally recognised tooth whitening system which gives brilliant results. We favour the in chair option, more than the home kit system – home kit systems are more for maintenance but it won’t give you the same result as doing it at our practice. The process takes about an hour and a half, and consults typically cost R4500. Tooth whitening will never replace fully fledged smile makeovers, or absolute cosmetic dentistry in the form of ceramic veneers, or cosmetic bonding, but it is a lovely way to get your foot in the door.
What is involved in the Britesmile Whitening Procedure?
After a routine dental cleaning, the Britesmile teeth whitening procedure will begin, starting with the application of the appropriate concentration of whitening gel to your teeth.
The Britesmile blue light will then be positioned over your teeth, where the gel is usually applied for three 20 minute intervals. This activates the gel throughout the whitening process.
If you have had previous dental work such as crown/bridges or teeth veneers, or if you are nursing or pregnant, the Britesmile whitening procedure is not recommended. However, these factors will be reviewed by our dentists.
Britesmile Tooth Whitening Consultation and Treatment Planning
We will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth and gums before deciding whether Britesmile teeth whitening is suitable for you, ensuring proper health. We will also chat to you about lifestyle habits and oral hygiene, in order to determine which tooth whitening technique or product would benefit you the best.
If you are planning on having other cosmetic dental procedures done – such as veneers – to ensure a better match between your natural dentition and the work done, teeth whitening may be recommended by us. However, depending on the condition of your teeth, tooth whitening might not be your best option.
All previous dental work will be discussed by us during consultation, as crowns and veneers will not respond to whitening agents.
How To Maintain Your Britesmile Whitened Teeth
We advise that you avoid certain food and beverages when trying to maintain the whitening effect of your Britesmile teeth whitening treatment. Beverages such as tea, red wine, coffee and cola should be avoided or used in moderation as they will stain your teeth.
We will also suggest that you do not consume tobacco products – as this will stain your teeth even after whitening- and maintain good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing) to prevent stains from returning. We also recommend that you visit us regularly, and use toothpaste which contains whitening agents to maintain the results of the procedure.
Britesmile Teeth Whitening Treatment Time
Treatment time may vary, but the average chair time per Britesmile whitening patient is approximately one hour.
