Dental veneers

Discover the Difference with JJS Dentistry’s Dental Veneers

Experience a brighter smile with the unmatched quality and care of JJS Dentistry’s dental veneers. At our dental practice in Cape Town, we believe in providing our patients with innovative solutions that not only enhance their smiles but also preserve the natural teeth.

Led by renowned surgical dentist Dr JJ Serfontein, our approach to dental veneers sets us apart, ensuring you receive quality dental care without compromising the health of your natural teeth.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite material custom-made to fit over the front surface of your teeth. They are designed to improve the appearance of your smile by correcting a variety of dental issues, such as discolouration, chips, unevenness, and gaps between teeth.

Veneers provide a conservative approach to changing a tooth’s colour and shape, not only enhancing the appearance but also adding strength to natural tooth enamel.

The JJS Dentistry approach to veneers

Preserving natural teeth

At JJS Dentistry, we believe in maintaining as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. Unlike traditional methods that often require extensive grinding down of the original tooth, Dr JJ Serfontein uses advanced techniques that minimise alterations to your teeth.

This approach preserves the integrity of your natural teeth and reduces the risk of sensitivity and discomfort after the procedure.

Our expertise

Dr JJ Serfontein is a dedicated professional who combines artistry with precision dentistry to deliver beautiful and sustainable results. His commitment to conservative dentistry means he carefully evaluates your individual needs and customises treatments that align with preserving your oral health.

Why choose dental veneers?

Veneers are ideal for those looking to make lasting improvements to their smile without undergoing extensive dental procedures. Here are several reasons why choosing dental veneers can be a transformative experience:

  • Cosmetic Improvement: Veneers effectively cover stains, chips, and gaps, giving you a flawless, white smile.
  • Durability: With proper care, dental veneers can last for years, making them an excellent long-term investment in your smile.
  • Minimal Invasiveness: Because veneers require little alteration of the natural teeth, the process is less invasive compared to other dental restorations.
  • Customisation: Each set of veneers is tailor-made to fit the unique shape of your teeth, providing a natural and comfortable fit.
  • Confidence Boosting: A great smile can significantly boost your confidence and impact your social and professional interactions positively.

Why JJS Dentistry’s veneers?

Choosing JJS Dentistry for your dental veneers means selecting a practice that values quality, aesthetics, and the health of your natural teeth.

How to navigate the holiday season with braces

The holiday season is officially here, bringing its festive cheer and array of delicious treats. However, if you’re one of the many navigating this time with braces, you might be wondering if (and how) you can indulge without harming your dental appliance or ruining your orthodontic progress.

Don’t panic yet — we’re here to help you enjoy the holidays, braces and all, with certified tips to navigating all the festive delights.

1. Know your braces-friendly foods

Navigating a holiday feast with braces doesn’t mean you have to miss out. The key is knowing what’s safe to eat. Soft foods are your best friends. Think mashed potatoes, stuffing, and soft-cooked vegetables. For dessert, opt for jelly and custard or soft cookies.

Remember: The gentler, the better for your braces.

2. Foods to avoid

Some holiday favourites can be a bit too challenging for braces. Hard, crunchy and sticky foods are on the naughty list. These include nuts, hard candies, caramel, and popcorn.

Treats like these can damage your braces or get stuck, leading to a less-than-pleasant post-meal clean-up session.

3. Holiday sweets to enjoy with care

We know it’s tough to resist holiday sweets! The good news is you don’t have to skip them entirely — just be selective and moderate.

Enjoy softer sweets, and be sure to brush your teeth well afterwards to prevent cavities. Chocolates (without nuts or caramel) can be a safe bet. Moderation is key here.

4. How to navigate discomfort

Sometimes, braces can cause discomfort, and the last thing you want is for this to dampen your festive spirit.

If your braces are new or recently adjusted, stick to softer foods. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also help.

5. Keep up with your oral hygiene

With all the feasting, staying on top of your oral hygiene is crucial. Make sure to brush and floss properly after eating, paying special attention to the areas around your braces.

It’s the perfect time to show your teeth some extra love!

6. Stay hydrated

Drinking water throughout the day not only keeps you hydrated but also helps wash away food particles and sugars from your teeth. It’s a simple yet effective way to maintain your oral health.

7. Be prepared

Carry a braces care kit with you to holiday gatherings. Include a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. This way, you can quickly deal with any food particles that find their way into your braces, preventing any discomfort or embarrassment.

8. Consult your orthodontist

Before diving into the holiday festivities, it’s a good idea to have a quick check-up with your orthodontist. They can provide personalised advice and ensure your braces are in order.

9. Embrace the braces

Remember, braces are a part of your journey to a beautiful smile. Don’t be self-conscious about them. Instead, embrace them as a sign of the amazing transformation your teeth are undergoing.

Smile freely and enjoy the festive season!

10. Enjoy yourself

Most importantly, don’t let braces stop you from enjoying the holiday season. With some preparation and care, you can fully participate in all the merriment.

At JJS Dentistry, we understand the challenges that come with wearing braces, especially during a season filled with tempting treats.

By following these tips, you can easily navigate the festive period and keep your orthodontic treatment on track.

dental implants vs dentures

Dental Implants vs Dentures: Understanding your options for missing teeth

At JJS Dentistry, we understand that having missing teeth can significantly affect your confidence and quality of life. Fortunately, there are two popular solutions for replacing missing teeth: dental implants and dentures

If you’ve lost a few (or all) teeth and are looking for your next best option, we have expert advice to help you make an informed decision.

What are dental implants and dentures?

Before diving into which is best, let’s first understand each dental solution.

Dental implants

Implants are a long-term, fixed solution for missing teeth. They consist of a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone to replace your tooth root. An abutment is placed on the post, and then a custom-made crown is fitted onto the abutment, resulting in a natural-looking and fully functional tooth replacement.

When you hear ‘dentures,’ you may think of senior citizens and their false teeth. But dentures come in all sorts. They are removable prosthetic devices designed to replace multiple missing teeth. Dentures can be partial (replacing a few missing teeth) or complete (replacing all the natural teeth). Aesthetic-wise, dentures consist of a gum-coloured base made of acrylic with artificial teeth attached.

Understanding the benefits and disadvantages of dental implants and dentures

When it comes to deciding which is better, we’re comparing dental implants and dentures in terms of comfort, functionality, appearance and maintenance.

1. Comfort

Dental implants feel more like natural teeth, as they are anchored securely in the jawbone. This eliminates the discomfort and slippage that can sometimes occur with dentures.

Dentures may initially feel awkward, but most patients adjust to them over time.

2. Functionality

Dental implants provide a stronger bite force compared to dentures, allowing you to eat a wider variety of foods without difficulty.

Dentures may limit your food choices, making it challenging to chew hard or sticky foods.

3. Appearance

Both dental implants and dentures can offer a natural-looking appearance. However, dental implants have the advantage of preventing jawbone deterioration, which can cause a sunken facial appearance over time.

Dentures may not provide the same level of support to the facial structure as they sit on top of the gums.

4. Maintenance

Dental implants require similar maintenance to natural teeth, including regular brushing, flossing and dental check-ups.

Dentures, however, require additional cleaning steps, such as soaking overnight in a denture solution and handling with care to prevent breakage.

Things to consider when choosing between dental implants and dentures

There are several factors to think about when deciding how to fill your missing teeth:

1. Cost

Dental implants generally have a higher upfront cost than dentures. However, they are a long-term investment in your oral health, often lasting a lifetime with proper care.

Dentures may have an initial lower cost, but they require periodic adjustments and replacements, potentially leading to long-term expenses.

2. Candidacy

Only some people are suitable candidates for dental implants. Patients must have adequate jawbone density and be in good oral health.

Dentures are a more accessible option for those who may not qualify for dental implants due to medical conditions, bone loss, or budget constraints.

3. Personal choice

Ultimately, the decision to pick dental implants or dentures will come down to your personal preferences and lifestyle.

Some patients may prioritise the permanence and comfort of dental implants, while others may prefer the non-surgical and removable nature of dentures.

When considering dental implants or dentures, it’s always best to chat with a dental professional to discuss your individual needs and concerns.

At JJS Dentistry, our experienced team will guide you through the decision-making process and recommend the best solution for your oral health and smile.

Dental anxiety

The psychology of dental anxiety and how to overcome it

When it comes to fearing dental visits, you’re not alone. Dental anxiety is a common problem that affects millions of people around the world. It’s a condition that causes people to feel nervous or fearful about going to the dentist.

While it’s normal to feel a bit of apprehension before going to the dentist, dental anxiety can be so severe that it keeps people from getting the dental care they need. At JJS Dentistry, we provide a welcoming and calming environment to help ease your dental anxiety and ensure you feel safe and comfortable.

What is dental anxiety?

Dental anxiety is an intense fear or nervousness people feel when they are faced with the idea of going to the dentist. This can manifest in different ways, such as feeling physically ill, sweating, shaking, or even experiencing a panic attack. Some people even avoid going to the dentist altogether, causing them to neglect their dental care.

What causes dental anxiety?

There are many reasons why you may experience dental anxiety. However, one of the most common and unfortunate is a negative experience at the dentist’s office. For example, you may have had a dental visit at a young age where the dentist was extremely rude, or you endured a painful procedure that has left a lasting impression.

Other causes of dental anxiety include:

The fear of pain

While most (if not all) dental procedures are painless, many people fear going to the dentist because they think it will be painful. This is simply not true, and in cases where procedures may be painful, there are various sedation options available to keep you feeling comfortable and calm.

Having experienced trauma

People who have experienced trauma or abuse may develop anxiety about anything that involves physical contact, including going to the dentist. In addition, mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression and PTSD can also contribute to feeling this way.

Needing personal space

At JJS Dentistry, we understand that having sharp instruments poking around in your mouth probably seems like an unpleasant situation. But our dentists are highly trained in Slow and gentle dentistry to provide the most high-quality and pain-free experience possible.

Feeling embarrassed

It’s common to feel ashamed or embarrassed about the state of your teeth when visiting the dentist. You might be afraid of being judged or scolded, but that is never the case with compassionate and caring dentists, such as those at our practice. Our goal is to help you achieve your perfect smile, no matter where you’re at in your oral health journey.

Having no control

Sitting in a dentist’s chair with your mouth wide open can feel very vulnerable, and the lack of control over the situation leaves some feeling concerned and anxious. This is entirely normal, but it’s important to remember that your health and safety are the top priority for dental professionals.

Overcoming dental anxiety

Fortunately, dental anxiety can be cured with a few simple steps. If you are someone who struggles with dental anxiety, these tips will help you work through your fear and receive the care you need.

1. Talk to us

If you’re anxious about going to the dentist, the first step is to talk to your dentist. Let us know what you’re feeling and why. From here, we can take steps to ensure you feel more comfortable about your appointment, such as explaining the procedure in detail or being extra gentle. Your dentist should never dismiss your concerns.

2. Practice relaxation techniques

Deep breathing, medication, and visualisation are relaxation techniques that can be very helpful in reducing anxiety. Try practising these techniques before and during your dental appointment to help you stay calm and centred.

3. Bring something with you for a distraction

Distractions such as music, audiobooks, or stress toys can help take your mind off of your anxiety and make the experience much more manageable.

4. Consider sedation dentistry

Sedation dentistry is an option for people with severe dental anxiety. This involves taking medication before the appointment to help you feel calm and relaxed during the procedure. At JJS Dentistry, we administer sedation in several forms, including oral and IV sedation, to help you feel at ease during procedures.

Visit us at JJS Dentistry for a world-class and pain-free dental experience that will transform how you view dentistry.

dental trends

The top 6 dental trends shaping dentistry in 2023

2022 was undoubtedly the year of the patient, with dental practices placing emphasis on creating the best patient experience possible. From enjoying Netflix while you get your teeth checked to friendly and welcoming staff caring for you at every step, we at JJS Dentistry had a phenomenal year in 2022. And we can’t wait to continue bringing you new and exciting dental services in 2023.

And while we will continue to prioritise our patients and their dental experiences, this year is all about technological shifts in the dental industry. We’re seeing the rise of Artificial Intelligence everywhere and even more high-tech ways to diagnose and treat dental problems.

Here are our top dental trends for 2023:

1. AI on the rise

Artificial Intelligence is slowly making its way into dentistry with new and exciting innovations that are sure to bring about more efficient ways to care for your oral health. Currently, AI is being used to help detect cavities and assist with cleanings in other parts of the world, but it may soon be a new fixture at high-end practices across the globe.

2. Laser Dentistry

Although it’s not a new concept (in fact, lasers have been used in dentistry since 1994), laser dentistry is becoming more and more common for treating dental issues. A laser uses a strong light to gently remove decay and bacteria, leaving you with healthier gums and teeth that heal much faster.

Lasers have many benefits, including being less invasive and eliminating the need for suturing. For this reason, they are an integral part of any high-end dental practice. At JJS Dentistry, we pride ourselves on using the latest technology to give our patients the best service.

3. 3D Technology

Same-day dentistry has completely transformed the state of dental services. With the addition of 3D technology, we can perform full restorations on the same day instead of waiting weeks for a dental laboratory to produce your prosthetics. In addition, dental crowns, bridges, veneers and custom aligners are readily available and tailored to your mouth shape and needs.

3D technology is an excellent solution to all your cosmetic dental concerns. It helps improve your smile and shortens the process of dental procedures, allowing for efficient service.

4. Virtual Dentistry

Since the pandemic, industries have learned to adapt to new ways of providing services remotely, and dentistry is no exception. For example, the rise of virtual consultations and teledentistry has allowed patients who are unable to visit practices in person to receive specific dental care, whether it be treatment recommendations or answering questions about oral health. In some cases, you can also receive a health check-up through a Zoom video call, allowing you to access quick healthcare while on the go.

5. Digital impressions

Previously, if you visited the dentist for a prosthetic, you would receive a mould that shapes your teeth and mouth to create an impression. However, with new digital technology, we can now create more accurate simulations of your mouth using digital impressions. These highly accurate digital models are made using high-tech software that scans your mouth.

The experience is also simplified and less daunting than traditional moulds, ensuring you benefit on all fronts from your treatment.

6. Natural dental products

With the rise of technology comes the rise of sustainability and going green. As a result, many dental practices are implementing changes and products that promote a more sustainable way of living, including biodegradable packaging and natural dental cleaning aids that do the job just as well.

Patients can make helpful changes at home by switching to bamboo toothbrushes and toothpaste free from harmful chemicals.

Slow Dentistry

Why we should all practice Slow Dentistry

We could all do with some slowing down in our lives, but Slow Dentistry is more than a means of encouraging dentists to take more time with their treatments and patients.

Slow Dentistry is a movement that seeks to change the way dentists practice and engage with patients. It’s about raising the standard of care and providing innovative solutions to complex dental issues – something we are experts in at JJS Dentistry.

The need to slow down

In modern times, dentists are facing issues they never have before. There’s an urgent need to see more patients in a short amount of time and a highly competitive industry. However, this can lead to rushed treatments, mistakes and poor patient experiences.

The Slow Dentistry movement implores dentists and dental practices to take their time with patients and promote quality over quantity. We are living in an age where we prioritise the patient’s experience, including quality care and safety.

We believe in protecting our patients and staff and providing world-class care tailored to each patient, which is why we are firm advocates for Slow Dentistry and implement it daily in our practice.

Learn more about how we incorporate Slow Dentistry here.

Elements of Slow Dentistry

Many factors are involved in promoting Slow Dentistry, and we take care to include them all at JJS Dentistry to ensure our patients receive a high standard during each and every appointment.

Hygiene care

Much like our care, we ensure that our dental practice maintains a high standard. Hygiene is essential for any medical facility, so we conduct routine cleanings and disinfections throughout the practice to prevent the spread of bacteria.

As a medical facility, we must adhere to universal and country-specific hygiene guidelines. Still, we go above and beyond to ensure our dental clinic is patient-ready.

Pain-free dentistry

Despite advancements in technology, there is still a stigma against dental practices. In addition, specific procedures can cause patients to feel anxious or uncomfortable. Slow Dentistry is about utilising advanced technology to ensure pain-free experiences for patients.

At JJS Dentistry, we use various sedation techniques to help our patients feel relaxed and at ease during their treatments. Our friendly staff also provide a welcoming and non-judgemental atmosphere to all patients.

Informed consent

Patient consent is an essential part of providing dental treatment. Slow Dentistry encourages us to prioritise patient health and safety above all else through informed consent.

As a patient, you deserve to make informed decisions about your healthcare. Therefore, we thoroughly explain each procedure to patients and ensure they are aware of potential risks or complications.

All patients are required to sign a consent form before treatment, ensuring both your and our staff’s safety throughout the process.

Quality care

Although we endeavour to make your visit as efficient as possible, we still want you to receive proper care and attention to your dental needs. Slow Dentistry promotes quality over speed to allow each patient the same level of expert care.

By combining our advanced technology and Slow Dentistry elements, we can treat patients efficiently and maintain a high standard of service.

Dental resin bonding

The ins and outs of dental resin bonding

Dental resin bonding offers a simple, pain-free solution to bring back your smile. The treatment is done by applying a thin coat of resin to the surface of the teeth. And in this way, we can transform your smile in one sitting. However, bonding is not always the solution for everyone, and we do a thorough assessment before deciding if it’s the best treatment for you.

What does resin bonding treat?

Resin bonding can repair damaged teeth, hide discolouration and protect chips and cracks in your teeth. It’s also an effective way to improve the shape and size of your teeth and lighten their colour. In addition, the procedure doesn’t require any sedation, making it non-invasive, and you can rest assured knowing you have gained a natural smile with no sign of damage or stains.

Who should get resin bonding?

Resin bonding is ideal for chipped or cracked teeth, discolouration, gaps between the teeth or small teeth. Dr JJ Serfontein will advise if this treatment is right for you after thoroughly assessing your teeth and discussing your concerns.

If you suffer from misaligned or missing teeth, an overbite or underbite, or have a complex case of damaged teeth, then resin bonding is not the solution for you. And if this is the case, Dr JJ Serfontein will work with you to create a treatment plan that addresses all of your concerns.

Are there any risks?

Luckily, there aren’t any significant risks to be worried about with resin bonding. The only issue to note is that resin isn’t as strong as your natural teeth and is more prone to chipping or separating from your existing teeth. There is also the chance of your dental bonding discolouring if you smoke or consume foods and drinks that stain.

The condition of your existing teeth, affordability and goals all play a role in whether you will receive resin bonding.

What is the cost of resin bonding?

Various factors play a role in the cost of your resin bonding procedure. For example, we consider the treatment’s location, how much resin we use and our expertise when calculating the final amount.

Dr JJ Serfontein will work with you to understand your budget and concerns and advise on an estimated amount once your treatment plan has been finalised.

What you can expect

The first step is always a discussion between you and Dr JJ Serfontein about your needs, goals and budget. We want to assess your condition and understand what you hope to achieve.

Our composite resin bonding treatment is safe and painless and can easily be done in one session. Dr Serfontein will first remove some of the enamel from the teeth’ surface so that the resin can be appropriately shaped.

We then apply the bonding agent and shape the resin on top of each tooth. This is where we effectively implement our extensive expertise and artistry. Shaping the resin takes immense skill and experience, both of which Dr JJ Serfontein has extensively.

Once we are happy with the shaping, the resin is cured using a special, and we polish the teeth for a final touch. As this is a non-invasive procedure, you can resume your usual daily activities without downtime.

See one of our incredible transformations below!

The lovely lady needed her smile enhanced, so we decided the best treatment would be a gum lift and resin bonding.

Not sure if dental resin bonding is right for you? Find out more here.

Caring for resin bonding

Taking care of your dental bonding will mostly happen at home. It’s essential to continue with regular daily hygiene to ensure the longevity of your bonding. Here’s how:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily
  • Floss daily
  • Use a mouthwash regularly
  • Don’t bite on hard food or objects
  • Avoid smoking and foods and drinks that stain, such as coffee
  • Visit us for your bi-annual check-ups and cleanings

If you experience a chip or stain on your dental bonding, contact us as soon as possible to set up an appointment.

Digital impressions

Why we use digital impressions at our practice

Digital impressions are more accurate and more dependable than old “putty”. They’re also more comfortable and less of a daunting experience for patients. In this blog, we’ll take a look at how digital impressions work and why we use them.

What is a digital dental impression?

A dental impression is an accurate mould of an individual’s teeth. Traditionally, this is complete using casting materials to create a negative imprint of the teeth. The imprint is then used to create a replica of the teeth’s shape. Modern advances in technology mean that we can now create virtual impressions of the hard and soft tissues in the mouth using special scanning devices. These digital impressions are highly accurate and can be complete in minutes, with minimum discomfort for the patient.

What does a digital dental impression involve?

You will receive an anaesthetic, and we dust your teeth with special titanium dioxide powder in order to scan. This allows Dr Serfontein to create a powder-free, 3D image of your teeth. We capture the digital impression using an intraoral wand that is inserted into your mouth and moved over the surface of the teeth. Our digital impressions also use a chairside monitor to display the impression image as it is captured. So, you can see the images as they’re captured!

Benefits of Digital Impressions vs Traditional Impressions

Digital impressions mean greater comfort

As a patient, the main benefit of digital impressions is comfort. Traditional impressions can be rather uncomfortable with their sticky putty and large plastic trays. The hard, long, hard sides of the tray extend far back in your mouth, which can cause a gag reflex. In addition, when the putty is removed, it can leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Digital impressions, on the other hand, uses an intraoral scanner slim wand- no putty, trays or gagging.

The scan itself is complete in just a few minutes. There’s taste and no mess to worry about. The result is a more pleasant and relaxing experience for you.

Digital impressions equal greater accuracy

Putty impressions create a “negative impression” of the teeth. To see how the teeth really look, the dentist fills the impression  with clay-like material to form the 3D “positive” mould. All that modelling allows for small errors and imperfections that can interfere with your treatment plan. Digital impressions are free from these errors as they rely solely on the images captured during the scan. Since dental treatment is unique to every patient, starting with the most accurate data is essential to achieve good results.

Easily shareable

Digital impressions are on a computer, so Dr Serfontein can share them with the dental lab or fabricator straight away. Faster retrieval of your data means your dental restorations will arrive quicker.

You’ll be able to start and finish treatment much sooner. Also, keeping those images on the computer lets Dr Serfontein access them easily throughout your treatment, so he can reference them as needed.

Greener alternative

Plastic trays and putty, and plastic used in traditional impressions wind up in the landfill eventually. Digital images are on a computer, so they don’t add to pollution.

Find out more about our advanced technology

Digital impressions rely on the most advanced dental technology. This means they’re not available at every practice. As a top dental practice in Cape Town, JJS Dentistry uses digital technology to create customised treatment plans for all patients. In addition, Dr JJ Serfontein has experience treating people from all across the world.

How to deal with tooth wear

How to deal with tooth wear

Did you know that tooth enamel is the hardest structure in the body? That’s right. It’s even harder than bone! Enamel is meant to withstand a lifetime of chewing forces and biting. However, various types of tooth wear can occur over time. Wear and tear is the irreversible loss of tooth structure, which is often unsightly, painful, and hinders the function of teeth. In this blog, we take a look at the causes of tooth wear and how we treat it.

Types of tooth wear

Dental erosion usually occurs when acid comes in contact with the teeth. However, there are three different kinds of tooth wear:

Attrition refers to wear caused by tooth-to-tooth contact. It usually occurs where the teeth meet on the biting edges. Attrition on front teeth results in wear patterns on both the top and bottom teeth. Bruxism (tooth grinding) is the main cause of this type of tooth wear.

Abfraction occurs when a misaligned bite or regular grinding create abnormal pressure on the tooth. This results in a notch forming on the side of the tooth near the gum line.

Abrasion is similar to abfraction, but it is caused by an external mechanical force, such as a toothbrush. If you brush too hard against the surface of the tooth or use a toothbrush with hard bristles, the constant wear and tear can cause a notch-like surface at the gum line.

Symptoms of tooth wear

The symptoms of erosion include:

  • Teeth appear to become shorter
  • Teeth appear glazed and smooth (due to the tooth surface being worn away)
  • Fillings sit higher than the surrounding tooth surface
  • The chewing surfaces of the teeth showing smooth, concave craters
  • Sensitive teeth.
  • Teeth appearing yellow (due to darker coloured tissue showing through thinning enamel)

How to prevent enamel loss

Avoid acidic foods

Excessive acid can be detrimental to the health of your teeth. Acid can eat through your teeth’s strong enamel and expose the softer insides of your teeth and create cavities for bacteria to grow and hide in.

Wear a nightguard if your dentist recommends one

Some people clench or grind their teeth, and they don’t even know it, especially at night. Bruxism can cause toothaches and other symptoms such as worn enamel and tooth sensitivity. All these symptoms make your teeth more vulnerable to tooth decay, cracks, and chips. If you’ve been diagnosed with bruxism and have a nightguard, wear it to prevent future problems.

Don’t chew on things you shouldn’t

This may sound like the kind of advice we would give to a child, but it applies to people of all ages. While wood, plastic, or fingernails may not feel hard enough to cause damage, chewing on these materials a lot can wear your teeth. This leads to toothaches and enamel loss. Chewing on ice is also a major no-no. Many people say the act of chewing helps them think. If that’s the case, we suggest you opt for sugar-free gum instead.

Treatment options for tooth wear

For minor abfractions or abrasions, we will likely place a filling on the side of the tooth over the damaged surface to help protect against continued wear. Alternatively, we may use fluoride treatment at your six-month preventive care appointments. We will continue to monitor the site of the wear to ensure it doesn’t worsen. Clear braces

3 things to know about getting clear braces

If you’ve considered getting orthodontics to align your teeth, the inconvenience of traditional braces may have impacted your decision to take the plunge. Thankfully, Dr JJ Serfontein at JJS Dentistry in Cape Town offers a new solution for people who want to align their teeth without traditional braces’ inconveniences.

Clear braces are a revolutionary orthodontics system. It offers all the benefits of traditional braces without discomfort and aesthetic impact. You can easily remove the aligners when eating or during important events and put them back in at your convenience. You can learn more about the processes involved here.

It sounds phenomenal – but there are some essential things you need to consider if you’re planning on orthodontic treatment:

1. Clear braces are not a suitable treatment for every case.

Clear Aligners works for patients who need mild to moderate levels of correction to misaligned teeth. If you require more severe intervention for your smile to align, clear braces may not work for you. The good news is that there are many options at JJS Dentistry – feel free to give us a call and schedule a consultation if you’re interested in Orthodontic treatment. We’ll explain all your options and guide you through the process.

2. Getting clear braces is not a short process.

Based on your unique case, your Clear Aligners treatment may take months or even years to conclude. It is not a quick-fix solution for misaligned teeth. The benefit is that you can remove the aligner tray when eating or for events, so no one will ever know that you’re wearing orthodontic devices.

3. Clear braces are a hands-on treatment.

Your aligner trays will need to be swapped regularly, depending on your progress, which means that you will need multiple appointments with your orthodontist throughout your treatment. At JJS Dentistry, we can map out your treatment plan so you know what you’re committing to before you start.

Clear Aligners vs Traditional Braces

If you’re considering orthodontics, Clear Aligners is a convenient option with an aesthetic benefit – but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work just as well as traditional braces. In some cases, Clear Aligners can correct misalignment faster than conventional braces can! During your consultation at JJS Dentistry, we can go over all your options and discuss each’s pros and cons to help you make the best decision.

Emax veneers: the future of dentistry

Emax veneers: the future of dentistry

Veneers are thin layers of tooth-coloured material that we bond to the front surface of discoloured or damaged teeth. The goal is to correct various teeth problems. Emax porcelain veneers are the types of veneers that we most recommended for our patients. The reason for this; they give your teeth the natural translucence and lustre of a healthy smile.

Emax porcelain veneers are made from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic.

This material is well-known for its superior strength, even when cut into very thin slices. We adjust the clear ceramic’s transparency and light diffusion properties to replicate the structure of your natural tooth. The result is an unnoticeable restoration.

When do we use Emax veneers?

Patients who want to enhance their appearance by improving the aesthetic quality and structure of teeth may benefit from Emax. Adults with misaligned, misshaped or crooked teeth are also good candidates.

In addition, those with chipped teeth and teeth with inconsistent spacing and gaps can benefit. In some cases, we use Emax veneers as an alternative to teeth whitening. Emax not only re-shapes but also masks tooth discolouration and staining.

The veneer process

At your first appointment, we will evaluate your tooth structure, facial features and bite to determine whether Emax is suitable for your case. Next, we will design custom Emax porcelain veneers for your teeth, giving you the option to “try your new smile” and see what the final outcome will be once you receive your permanent veneers.

At this stage, you can choose to change the size, shape or shade of your teeth to enhance your smile. If your teeth are unevenly stained, we may use multiple layers of veneers for the teeth that have more stains. This will help create a more uniform look.

Once you are happy with your brand new smile, we will send the design to the laboratory, where they will create your veneers. In 1-2 weeks, you will return to our office. Finally, we will bond the veneers to your teeth with resin cement.

The benefits of Emax veneers

Minimal tooth removal: The placement of all types of veneers requires us to remove some tooth enamel to create room for bonding. However, since Emax veneers are considerably tougher and stronger than other veneers, we remove very little enamel. As a result, you will experience little to no discomfort during the veneer process.

You can match the colour of veneers to your existing teeth: This allows for a more natural-looking smile and seamless integration. You can choose a precise shade and colour of veneers to improve the colour of one or more stained teeth, giving you the desired smile.

Preserving your natural teeth: You can preserve more of your tooth’s structure. Also, your natural teeth do not become weaker. Bonding with Emax greatly improves the strength of the teeth.

You can adjust the size of your teeth: You can make subtle to moderate changes to your teeth depending on your needs. Emax veneers come in thicknesses of between 0.3mm and 0.5mm. On the other hand, conventional porcelain veneers have a minimum thickness of 0.5mm. The thinness of Emax veneers allows for more flexibility.

Greater durability: Traditional porcelain veneers are prone to chips and cracks because of their thickness. Emax veneers are thinner and harder, offering superior durability. They also last longer than other types of veneers.

More natural-looking: They allow more light, giving your teeth a more natural appeal. As a result, they will give you a boost of confidence, knowing that no one can tell you’re wearing dental veneers.

Cosmetic dentistry is a significant investment. You want to ensure you’re going to get the results you want before you get started. Now you can with our virtual smile design. Our experienced dentists use advanced digital technology to show you what your new smile will look like before treatment begins, so you can rest assured you’re making the right decision.

Besides digital x-rays and impressions, we also use intra-oral cameras to produce a complete picture of your mouth and your oral health. Not only can we enhance the quality of the services you receive but also your comfort with sedation dentistry.

Digital dental care

Technology can help automate and simplify dental workflow. Why not implement in medicine. There are software packages and machinery that is designed to improve the patient-doctor experience when it comes to saving time. Using the latest filing software makes it easy to access any information with a quick search or a few taps of a button. It limits the chances of patient documents getting misplaced or lost.

Instead of having to manually look for physical notes after writing it down on a piece of paper, dentists can make notes on a tablet or computer, and know that they will see the same information when they need it later.  Your dentist can coordinate with laboratories to quickly learn the results of tests without waiting for days. Similar programs also communicate lab results instantaneously. This improvement saves time and money for the patient because you will not have to come in for more appointments than necessary.

Digital dentistry technologies provide quality care and dental workflow

There is a variety of digital dentistry technologies available in today’s technological era. These come in the form of computer-controlled devices. The commonality in all of them is that they provide more immediate and detailed information compared to the older methods of dental treatment. One of the most beneficial aspects on a professional level is possibly the ability of the new digital dentistry technologies to allow more efficient collaboration between dental professionals such as dentists and dental technicians. Naturally, the more precise diagnosis and restorations, the higher the quality of dental care.

Reduce complexity and simplify the digital workflow

From enjoying accurate remote scheduling to modifying treatment plans to notify the dentist the patient is ready for an exam, technology has improved the workflow for practices, especially the large ones. Typical minor cosmetic procedures like dental crowns can be manufactured and placed all in the same day because the making of the crown can be done inhouse.
