How to navigate the holiday season with braces

The holiday season is officially here, bringing its festive cheer and array of delicious treats. However, if you’re one of the many navigating this time with braces, you might be wondering if (and how) you can indulge without harming your dental appliance or ruining your orthodontic progress.

Don’t panic yet — we’re here to help you enjoy the holidays, braces and all, with certified tips to navigating all the festive delights.

1. Know your braces-friendly foods

Navigating a holiday feast with braces doesn’t mean you have to miss out. The key is knowing what’s safe to eat. Soft foods are your best friends. Think mashed potatoes, stuffing, and soft-cooked vegetables. For dessert, opt for jelly and custard or soft cookies.

Remember: The gentler, the better for your braces.

2. Foods to avoid

Some holiday favourites can be a bit too challenging for braces. Hard, crunchy and sticky foods are on the naughty list. These include nuts, hard candies, caramel, and popcorn.

Treats like these can damage your braces or get stuck, leading to a less-than-pleasant post-meal clean-up session.

3. Holiday sweets to enjoy with care

We know it’s tough to resist holiday sweets! The good news is you don’t have to skip them entirely — just be selective and moderate.

Enjoy softer sweets, and be sure to brush your teeth well afterwards to prevent cavities. Chocolates (without nuts or caramel) can be a safe bet. Moderation is key here.

4. How to navigate discomfort

Sometimes, braces can cause discomfort, and the last thing you want is for this to dampen your festive spirit.

If your braces are new or recently adjusted, stick to softer foods. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also help.

5. Keep up with your oral hygiene

With all the feasting, staying on top of your oral hygiene is crucial. Make sure to brush and floss properly after eating, paying special attention to the areas around your braces.

It’s the perfect time to show your teeth some extra love!

6. Stay hydrated

Drinking water throughout the day not only keeps you hydrated but also helps wash away food particles and sugars from your teeth. It’s a simple yet effective way to maintain your oral health.

7. Be prepared

Carry a braces care kit with you to holiday gatherings. Include a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. This way, you can quickly deal with any food particles that find their way into your braces, preventing any discomfort or embarrassment.

8. Consult your orthodontist

Before diving into the holiday festivities, it’s a good idea to have a quick check-up with your orthodontist. They can provide personalised advice and ensure your braces are in order.

9. Embrace the braces

Remember, braces are a part of your journey to a beautiful smile. Don’t be self-conscious about them. Instead, embrace them as a sign of the amazing transformation your teeth are undergoing.

Smile freely and enjoy the festive season!

10. Enjoy yourself

Most importantly, don’t let braces stop you from enjoying the holiday season. With some preparation and care, you can fully participate in all the merriment.

At JJS Dentistry, we understand the challenges that come with wearing braces, especially during a season filled with tempting treats.

By following these tips, you can easily navigate the festive period and keep your orthodontic treatment on track.

6 ways to keep Clear Aligners clean

6 ways to care for your clear aligners

Clear aligners have become one of the leading choices for those looking to straighten their teeth. These are made from medical-grade plastic and provide a hassle-free and aesthetically pleasing alternative to wire braces.

Many people have opted for this particular type of treatment because it is less irritating and more straightforward to look after than other braces. However, that does not mean clear aligners don’t require top-notch care while you are using them.

Why is it necessary to clean your aligners daily?

Much like our oral health, it’s important to look after the tools we use to take care of our teeth (such as our toothbrushes).

Your aligner spends most of its time in your mouth, meaning that it’s exposed to an array of food and bacteria that can get caught and build up over time if not properly cleaned regularly. The result can be complications such as bad breath, tooth decay, cavities, etc.

The invisible aesthetic is one of the many factors that people prefer when it comes to clear aligners, but without proper care, the aligner can become cloudy or stained. The impact on your smile will be negative, causing low self-esteem and poor oral hygiene.

Here are a few tips for looking after your clear aligners.

1. Remove your clear aligner before eating and drinking

Eating and drinking with an aligner are uncomfortable, but they can also cause damage to the device. Often the food and beverages that we consume can be harsh and cause stains or cracks in the aligner. Therefore, it’s always ideal to allow your aligner a break during meal times. However, you also don’t want to get any food stuck inside your aligner, as this can lead to a build-up of harmful bacteria.

2. Rinse your aligner regularly

Unless you’re planning on cleaning your aligner, always give it a rinse when removing and reinserting. Rinsing your aligner with room temperature water provides a quick wash to eliminate any dirt or bacteria on the surface, avoiding smelly odours.

3. Clean your teeth before reinserting your aligner

Before reinserting your aligner, brush and floss your teeth to provide a clean base for it – it’s especially crucial to clean your teeth after eating and drinking. By cleaning your teeth, you will remove any food decay or bacteria that could potentially harm your teeth and clear aligners while it’s in your mouth.

4. Soak and wash your aligners daily

Apart from rinsing your aligner and brushing your teeth, you also need to clean and soak it. Use gentle toothpaste or clear liquid soap with a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub the aligner and remove any build-up. Regular cleaning with the right materials will ensure that your aligner is clean while not damaging or tainting.

Soak your aligner alongside cleaning it to take extra precautions for removing all the bacteria and helping it stay completely see-through. Aligner cleaning crystals in lukewarm water provide the ideal soak for your aligner. Leave it to soak for 15 minutes before rinsing and reinserting or storing it.

5. Avoid harsh chemicals

Aligners can be easily eroded or stained if the incorrect cleaning agents are used. Avoid mouthwash or denture cleaner to soak your aligner, and make sure that you use a clear and gentle cleaning solution to brush the aligner. Certain toothpaste is too harsh and will cloud or erode the aligner.

6. Store your aligners in a case

Your aligner will benefit significantly from being stored correctly, so try to make it a habit to pack your Clear Aligners in its case each time you take it out. Make sure that the aligner is clean before placing it into the case, and also regularly clean the case so that you don’t end up putting your clean aligner into a dirty case.

Above all, you should try to create a care schedule for your aligner that fits into your daily routine to continue your regular cleaning and maintain your oral hygiene without compromising your own time or schedule.

Digital impressions

Why we use digital impressions at our practice

Digital impressions are more accurate and more dependable than old “putty”. They’re also more comfortable and less of a daunting experience for patients. In this blog, we’ll take a look at how digital impressions work and why we use them.

What is a digital dental impression?

A dental impression is an accurate mould of an individual’s teeth. Traditionally, this is complete using casting materials to create a negative imprint of the teeth. The imprint is then used to create a replica of the teeth’s shape. Modern advances in technology mean that we can now create virtual impressions of the hard and soft tissues in the mouth using special scanning devices. These digital impressions are highly accurate and can be complete in minutes, with minimum discomfort for the patient.

What does a digital dental impression involve?

You will receive an anaesthetic, and we dust your teeth with special titanium dioxide powder in order to scan. This allows Dr Serfontein to create a powder-free, 3D image of your teeth. We capture the digital impression using an intraoral wand that is inserted into your mouth and moved over the surface of the teeth. Our digital impressions also use a chairside monitor to display the impression image as it is captured. So, you can see the images as they’re captured!

Benefits of Digital Impressions vs Traditional Impressions

Digital impressions mean greater comfort

As a patient, the main benefit of digital impressions is comfort. Traditional impressions can be rather uncomfortable with their sticky putty and large plastic trays. The hard, long, hard sides of the tray extend far back in your mouth, which can cause a gag reflex. In addition, when the putty is removed, it can leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Digital impressions, on the other hand, uses an intraoral scanner slim wand- no putty, trays or gagging.

The scan itself is complete in just a few minutes. There’s taste and no mess to worry about. The result is a more pleasant and relaxing experience for you.

Digital impressions equal greater accuracy

Putty impressions create a “negative impression” of the teeth. To see how the teeth really look, the dentist fills the impression  with clay-like material to form the 3D “positive” mould. All that modelling allows for small errors and imperfections that can interfere with your treatment plan. Digital impressions are free from these errors as they rely solely on the images captured during the scan. Since dental treatment is unique to every patient, starting with the most accurate data is essential to achieve good results.

Easily shareable

Digital impressions are on a computer, so Dr Serfontein can share them with the dental lab or fabricator straight away. Faster retrieval of your data means your dental restorations will arrive quicker.

You’ll be able to start and finish treatment much sooner. Also, keeping those images on the computer lets Dr Serfontein access them easily throughout your treatment, so he can reference them as needed.

Greener alternative

Plastic trays and putty, and plastic used in traditional impressions wind up in the landfill eventually. Digital images are on a computer, so they don’t add to pollution.

Find out more about our advanced technology

Digital impressions rely on the most advanced dental technology. This means they’re not available at every practice. As a top dental practice in Cape Town, JJS Dentistry uses digital technology to create customised treatment plans for all patients. In addition, Dr JJ Serfontein has experience treating people from all across the world.

Clear braces

3 things to know about getting clear braces

If you’ve considered getting orthodontics to align your teeth, the inconvenience of traditional braces may have impacted your decision to take the plunge. Thankfully, Dr JJ Serfontein at JJS Dentistry in Cape Town offers a new solution for people who want to align their teeth without traditional braces’ inconveniences.

Clear braces are a revolutionary orthodontics system. It offers all the benefits of traditional braces without discomfort and aesthetic impact. You can easily remove the aligners when eating or during important events and put them back in at your convenience. You can learn more about the processes involved here.

It sounds phenomenal – but there are some essential things you need to consider if you’re planning on orthodontic treatment:

1. Clear braces are not a suitable treatment for every case.

Clear Aligners works for patients who need mild to moderate levels of correction to misaligned teeth. If you require more severe intervention for your smile to align, clear braces may not work for you. The good news is that there are many options at JJS Dentistry – feel free to give us a call and schedule a consultation if you’re interested in Orthodontic treatment. We’ll explain all your options and guide you through the process.

2. Getting clear braces is not a short process.

Based on your unique case, your Clear Aligners treatment may take months or even years to conclude. It is not a quick-fix solution for misaligned teeth. The benefit is that you can remove the aligner tray when eating or for events, so no one will ever know that you’re wearing orthodontic devices.

3. Clear braces are a hands-on treatment.

Your aligner trays will need to be swapped regularly, depending on your progress, which means that you will need multiple appointments with your orthodontist throughout your treatment. At JJS Dentistry, we can map out your treatment plan so you know what you’re committing to before you start.

Clear Aligners vs Traditional Braces

If you’re considering orthodontics, Clear Aligners is a convenient option with an aesthetic benefit – but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work just as well as traditional braces. In some cases, Clear Aligners can correct misalignment faster than conventional braces can! During your consultation at JJS Dentistry, we can go over all your options and discuss each’s pros and cons to help you make the best decision.

Clear Aligners at JJS Dentistry

Clear aligners are an alternative to traditional braces that gently straighten teeth and correct alignment issues. They are a clear set of plastic alignment trays that are more subtle in appearance and safer to use than traditional metal braces.

These clear alignment trays are designed especially for you and your specific dental needs. They are to be worn throughout the day, except while eating or brushing your teeth. Each alignment tray is worn for roughly two weeks before moving on to the next tray. The benefits of clear aligners include no food restrictions, normal oral hygiene methods, fewer office visits and shorter treatment time.

Clear braces are best suited for adults and teenagers and can be used to treat a variety of straightening issues, such as overcrowding, wide spacing between teeth, crossbite, overbite and underbite. Correcting these issues with aligners can reduce the chances of gum disease and abnormal strain on teeth.

Dr JJ Serfontein invites you to schedule a consultation to discuss your teeth straightening needs.

The clear aligner process can be summarised as follows:

First, impressions will be taken to ensure that clear braces are the best option for you. Next, a detailed treatment plan is developed to give you an idea of the final result. The custom aligners are then designed and your progress will be monitored, ensuring that you are comfortable and progressing well.

If this sounds like an exciting possibility for you, we encourage you to book your consultation right away. Clear braces can improve your appearance and, as a result, improve your confidence. This is our passion.

The sooner you get in touch, the sooner you can be on your way to achieving a healthier and more beautiful smile.

Short-term orthodontics

Short-term orthodontics

Many adults wish to have straighter teeth without the inconvenience of wearing braces for up to two years. Luckily, a straighter, more beautiful smile can be yours in just a few short months- thanks to short term orthodontics.

What is short-term orthodontics?

As the name suggests, short term orthodontics are braces that are used for a short period of time to align teeth. They are a fairly recent advancement in the field of orthodontics. We used Short term orthodontics to realign the front top and bottom teeth that are most visible when you smile.

How does short-term orthodontics work?

Similar to traditional braces, they rely on brackets and archwires that are attached to the front of teeth. However, in short term braces, moulds of your teeth are sent off, and braces are packaged into a custom-moulded tray. The custom-mould tray conforms to your teeth and gets fitted into your mouth, and the archwire is adjusted.

The Procedure: What’s Involved?

During your consultation, Dr JJ Serfontein will perform a comprehensive examination of your gums, teeth, and oral health to determine if you are a candidate for short term orthodontics. The examination includes taking X-rays, intraoral and facial photographs, and impressions of your teeth. If you are an ideal candidate, we will send your models off to a laboratory where they will create your custom braces. At your next appointment, we will install the brackets and tooth-coloured archwires.

After the initial placement appointment, you will need to visit us every four to five weeks for adjustments and tightening of the wires until your treatment is complete. These adjustment appointments should last only about 15 minutes. Once your treatment is complete, the wires and brackets are removed, revealing your brand new smile!

The benefits of short term braces

Less time Spent in Braces

Perhaps the best feature of short term braces is that it drastically reduces the time you need to spend in braces. For traditional braces, the average treatment time is two years. With short term orthodontics, the treatment time can be as little as six months.

Less noticeable

Although traditional steel braces are most often the types of braces used, ceramics braces can be substituted to make the braces less visible if you feel self-conscious about wearing braces.

Short term orthodontics is ordinarily less expensive than conventional braces. Since you pay for braces in monthly instalments, it means you will have to pay for fewer months as compared to traditional braces.

Are short-term braces right for you?

If your goal is an enhanced smile, short-term orthodontics is a suitable option, provided your jaw and teeth have developed fully. While short term braces are ideal for minor straightening issues, they cannot give you the same results as traditional orthodontics. Short term braces are primarily cosmetic and aimed at fixing crooked teeth. They will not fix or treat serious malocclusions such as overbites or underbites.

Caring for your orthodontics

Here’s how you make your treatment go smoothly as possible:

  • Follow all your orthodontist’s instructions on brushing and flossing.
  • Visit our Oral Hygienist every 6 months for a cleaning.
  • Avoid hard, crunchy or sticky foods. Rather eat soft foods which are easy to chew.
  • Beware of sugary, acidic soft drinks including regular and diet drinks, fruit juices, fruit drinks and energy drinks.
  • Wear your elastics.
  • Keep your scheduled appointments with your Orthodontist.

For the best results, we sometimes combine short-term orthodontic treatment with cosmetic treatments such as bonding, contouring and veneers.

At JJS Dentistry, we are committed to accurately assessing every patient’s need to treat it most effectively in the shortest period of time. We use state-of-the-art appliances and cutting-edge techniques. Contact us for an Orthodontist in Cape Town. We can help you achieve a healthy and gorgeous smile in no time!

What to include in your Clear Aligners Care Kit

What to include in your clear aligner care kit

Millions of people have discovered Clear Aligners, an alternative to straightening teeth without bulky metal braces. The convenience of this treatment provides flexibility without the pain and discomfort of fixed orthodontics. However, they do come with specific care instructions.

To make sure your treatment is successful, keep these essential items in your clear aligner care kit:

Clear aligner case or pouch

With clear aligners, you’ll be able to take your trays out for meals and the occasional snack. Avoid the costly mistake of losing your aligners by keeping a few extra cases. While you’ll probably receive a case or two from your dentist or orthodontist, you’ll want extras for your kit and other spots like your desk, nightstand or when you go out.

Cleaning supplies for your clear aligner trays

When you remove your aligners, it’s best to disinfect them. But sometimes you are nowhere near a bathroom.  This is where cleaning wipes will come in handy. Keep some cleaning wipes in your care kit for when you head out.  If you’re travelling overnight, include a denture cleaner or some cleaning crystals in your kit so you can soak your aligners.

Portable toothbrush and toothpaste

Every time you eat, you’ll take out your aligners, and then you’ll brush your teeth before you put them back in. You’ll be brushing in restaurants and at your workplace. You need a portable tooth kit that fits in your purse or coat pocket. A small, folding toothbrush offers great convenience when you’re on the go.

Floss or floss picks

Flossing is necessary to remove the food between your teeth, which is something you must do before you put your trays back on. The last thing you want is food particles festering in your teeth under a clear aligner. We know that string floss can be a little inconvenient when you’re on the go- floss picks may be a better option when you’re out and about.

Orthodontic wax

Even though aligners are more comfortable than traditional braces, you may still experience some discomfort from the aligners and any buttons or attachments the orthodontist might have adhered to your teeth to help straighten your smile. Orthodontic wax is designed to relieve pain caused by orthodontic devices. It creates a barrier which prevents further irritation and allows time for your mouth to heal.

Taking proper care of your aligner trays will not only give you a better experience during treatment, but it will also protect you from future oral health issues.  While the process of treatment can be a little daunting, it is well worth the investment and effort. After treatment, you’ll have a more dazzling smile that you won’t be afraid to show off!

Dr JJ Serfontein has many years of experience providing Clear Aligners treatment for patients all across the world. He offers Clear Aligners treatment as part of a smile makeover to completely transform your smile.

What to include in your Clear Aligners Care Kit

Crooked teeth? Skip the ugly stage, choose Clear Aligners

Clear Aligner treatment is a comfortable method of teeth straightening with the benefits of traditional braces. The treatment process consists of a series of clear trays that you are required to wear for weeks at a time. These aligners, like wire braces, apply a very gentle force to the teeth pushing them into the correct position. Clear Aligners offer a great aesthetic solution to realign crooked teeth because they appear virtually invisible.

The invisible aligners are custom-built to fit you and you alone. Due to how the trays are designed, Clear Aligners are the best for adults or teens and not young children because they are still in their development stage. Straightening a child’s teeth is more complicated. Their mouths are still growing and the doctor must think about this when setting up treatment. They might also still be losing teeth and have new adult teeth coming in.

You can only see aligners when you’re up close to someone wearing them and if you’re actually looking to find them, but it’s still hard to spot. Unlike traditional braces, there are no metal tracks or attachments to your teeth. You can remove the trays to eat more comfortably and brush your teeth. However, it is required that you keep them on most of the time to get the maximum benefits.

Final aligner trays after a full treatment

Once you complete your treatment with the final trays, it is time for retainers. These retainers are designed to look almost exactly the same as aligner trays. They will ensure that your teeth remain in their new place and that they don’t shift back. It is recommended that you wear the retainers full-time for about 6 weeks or as prescribed by your doctor. After that, you will only need to wear them when you go to bed and after seeing your orthodontist. You should refrain from wearing your retainers less than instructed without being advised to do so.

You may be wondering why retainers are necessary once the aligner refinement process has fine-tuned your smile. The fact is, if not monitored, your teeth can shift back into their original position because nothing about our bodies remains constant; Everything changes as we grow older and that includes our teeth.

Benefits Clear Aligners has to offer

  • Invisible appearance
  • Comfort
  • Improved cleanliness
  • Saves time
  • Safe and removable at home
  • Eat whatever you want
  • Better overall dental health
adult orthodontics

Correct crooked teeth with adult orthodontics

The main benefits of adult orthodontics include a healthier mouth and a better set of teeth. Most adults will typically avoid the possibility of getting fixed braces. Wire braces are chunky and seem childlike to many, especially when they are highly visible. The good news is that there are other options available for grown people – there are fixed and removable options that are not as visible as traditional braces. You can explore the best option for you after an oral assessment with Dr JJ.

Orthodontic treatments make a huge difference to the smile you want to show off, but doing it the traditional way usually takes years of patience, as it might be longer than you have anticipated. Candidates that have delayed or declined the standard orthodontic option due to the length of treatment now have a viable alternative. You can choose what is known as accelerated orthodontics, a form of therapy that is aimed at the same goal as regular orthodontic treatments but in a shorter period.

What is accelerated orthodontics?

Traditional orthodontic treatment takes a long time due to the limitations of the bone that surrounds the teeth; the slow and constant application of orthodontic forces triggers an induced process resulting in prolonged tooth movement. With this accelerated orthodontics, you can complete treatment in less time than traditional orthodontic patients. The acceleration is inflicted with a combination of advanced orthodontics and periodontal surgery, which activates the bone that surrounds the teeth. This process stimulates and softens the bone so that the teeth can be moved at an accelerated rate while adding new bone to create a better foundation for the teeth.

Alternative orthodontic solutions

There are also removable appliance solutions available. These include devices like maintainers, which serve the same purpose as fixed space maintainers. Retainers such as the popular clear aligners, which consist of clear trays that fit over your teeth and can be removed at bedtime and when you eat. Jaw repositioning, also known as splints, helps train the jaw to close in a more favourable position and can often be used for TMJ-related disorders. And palatal expanders designed to the arch of the upper jaw.

Dr JJ Serfontein specialises in different forms of cosmetic dentistry in the Cape Town area and is one of the most trusted dental practitioners in the country. If you suffer from crooked teeth and have low confidence that prevents you from being the best you, you can get an orthodontic treatment to realign your teeth without the unattractive look that comes with the traditional braces we know.

3 ways to straighten your teeth

Most people choose to straighten their teeth to achieve a more appealing smile and improve their oral health. Even if you had braces as a child, your teeth might have shifted and are probably misaligned, which results in many adults suffering from crooked teeth. While the options for straightening teeth used to be restricted to bracket and wire metal braces, there are now more options available for creating a beautiful smile.

Traditional Braces

When we think of braces, we automatically think about the traditional bracket and wire braces of two decades ago. Traditional braces are not what they used to be. Although they are still comprised of brackets and wires, the brackets are much smaller, come in colours for fun or concealment, and use fewer rubber bands to reduce the number of wounds in the mouth. While these are not the choice of many adults, they are still widely recommended for children and adolescents because treatment can be completed in 12 months.

New age clear aligners

Clear aligners are a new-age, revolutionary way to straighten your teeth. Instead of brackets and wires, clear removable plastic aligners are used to gently move teeth. Digital images are taken to map out treatment needs, and a custom treatment plan is made for each patient to determine how many liners will be needed. Most patients will wear 20 to 30 liners over 12 to 18 months. The liners are worn 20 to 22 hours a day and can be removed for eating and oral hygiene. Because the liners are clear, this is a popular choice for adults who want to maintain a professional appearance or don’t want anyone to know that they are straightening their teeth.

A complete makeover with veneers

Porcelain veneers are the complete makeover and a quick fix for mild to moderately crooked teeth. They are also used to improve the size and shape of teeth, if needed, to fill in gaps. Veneers are porcelain shells that are fitted over the natural teeth. Impressions are taken and sent off to a dental lab where custom veneers are made. You will then return to have the veneers bonded to the teeth. Removal of a thin layer of enamel is needed to fit the veneers over the existing teeth.

Clear Aligners for teens

Between sporting events, hanging out with friends, class assignments, and social engagements, teens today have busy schedules and face greater challenges when it comes to confidence than ever before. Imagine being able to give your teenager straighter teeth and a more confident smile the day they walk across the graduation stage, all without the hassle, drama and embarrassment of traditional metal braces.

Does it sound too good to be true? Maybe it’s time to consider clear aligners for teens.

The way clear aligners work

Clear aligners are a unique style of orthodontics that uses a series of plastic trays custom-made to your teen’s smile as opposed to metal and wires to straighten teeth. Because the aligners are clear, they are virtually invisible. Your teen simply wears the aligners 22 hours each day for about 2 weeks and then changes them out for a new aligner. Gradually, the aligners help move the teeth to their perfect position.

The benefits of clear aligners vs traditional braces

Your teen may be concerned about the misalignment of their teeth, but you may be more concerned with ensuring they stay clean and healthy. When considering braces, clear aligners offer a lot of benefits over metal braces.

Clear aligners are completely removable, so your teen can take them off to brush and floss their teeth. This way, their oral health routines won’t be disrupted for the months during orthodontic treatment.

Clear aligners fit firmly onto the teeth and can be removed so it doesn’t restrict a kid from playing their favourite sports, as the issue of wires and braces hurting the gums isn’t there.

Teens can enjoy any meal. Unlike metal braces, which have long lists of forbidden food, clear aligners have no such restrictions.

Easy to maintain good oral hygiene

Unlike metal braces, maintaining good oral hygiene is easy with Clear Aligners since Teens can brush and floss after removing the aligners. This helps in avoiding the probable white spots that develop at the end of a metal braces treatment.

Increased confidence

Studies have shown that up to 92% of teen fear that metal braces would cause them to be teased and keep them from fitting in with their peers. Clear Aligners is virtually invisible and allows them to achieve a healthy, confident smile without any embarrassment, ridicule, or fear.

Less time spent at appointments

Metal braces require orthodontic appointments to adjust bands and wires. With Clear Aligners, your teenager will only visit every 4-6 weeks to receive new sets of aligners and check on the progress of their teeth.

Also, with clinically proven results being 2.5 times faster than metal braces, it’s definitely one of the best orthodontic correction procedures that you can provide as a parent to your teenage children.

clear braces

4 benefits of clear braces treatment

Clear aligners, otherwise known as clear braces, will straighten your teeth without the use of conventional braces (which can be an ordeal, especially for adults). Utilising the latest technology, clear braces are created specifically for your unique needs in order to promote tooth movement. This process is not only recommended in most situations but is much more comfortable than the latter.

Here are 4 benefits to choosing clear braces over traditional braces

#1: Clear braces are much more comfortable than traditional braces

Traditional braces are not only clunky in your mouth but often can cause discomfort and annoyance when they are tightened. Aside from this, food is frequently caught in traditional metal braces. Fortunately, clear braces can be removed at any time if there is discomfort or a situation that calls for removal, such as brushing your teeth, flossing, or eating.

#2: Clear braces treat teeth faster than traditional braces

It can take years for metal braces to straighten out teeth, sometimes up to 5 years or more. Clear braces can do the same work in half the time, sometimes only a year or two. Who wouldn’t want to take the shorter and easier route?

#3: Clear braces are much more subtle to your appearance than traditional braces

Traditional braces are most often associated with the term “metal mouth.” Metal mouth is a thing of the past because clear braces are virtually undetectable. Your smile will not suffer while your teeth are straightening themselves out.

#4: Clear braces are safer than metal braces

Traditional braces have been known to cause damage to teeth. Oftentimes, they may cause “white scare” on the enamel. This is when white spots remain where the braces were implemented. Metal in your mouth can also cause punctures and/or scratches to the mouth, gums, lips, etc. With clear braces, there are no safety concerns. No cuts, cavities, or disease.

There are a number of reasons why we would highly suggest clear braces over traditional braces. The world of dentistry has come a long way. In modern times, choose a more comfortable and safer option. To learn more about these services, do not hesitate to contact our office. We look forward to discussing your orthodontic needs with you.

Life after clear aligners: Results and post-treatment maintenance

Orthodontic treatment, including clear aligners, is a lifetime commitment – once the initial treatment is complete, you will need to form certain habits in order to maintain your fantastic results.

Clear aligner treatment is an alternative to traditional wire braces. For many, braces are unattractive because they are too obvious for people to see, and their harsh metal structure creates a depressing aesthetic. The main advantage that comes with clear aligners is that the trays are discreet. You get to go through the process of straightening your teeth without everybody seeing it. The trays are made of plastic material, and they can be removed at home by simply slipping them off when you want to and slipping them back on at a later stage. Once the treatment is complete, you will need to wear your retainers consistently in order to maintain the alignment of your new smile.

Retainers are used to retain the position of your teeth, hence the name. The body is continually changing, and that goes for your teeth as well. The clear aligner process will shift your teeth into new positions, but your teeth will naturally drift back to their original positions if they are not stopped by retainers. The good news is that retainers work progressively, so over time, you will become less and less dependent on them to maintain your smile. In the beginning, you’ll need to wear them every night, but eventually, you’ll be able to wear them a few times a week as you see fit.

Oral hygiene

When the retainers are kept on, daily oral hygiene must be maintained. Good habits like brushing your teeth and flossing remain the same as they would without them. Keep your retainers clean at all times. There is no point in having clean teeth if you are going to wear dirty retainers over them.

Without practising oral hygiene, food and bacteria can build up and lead to cavities and other oral complications, such as tooth discolouration. You can use regular fluoride toothpaste with a soft bristle toothbrush to clean your retainers. To do this, you have to use warm water, not hot or water that is too cold. This mistake can change the shape of your retainers, especially if you leave them to sit in the water for an extended period.

Our Clear Aligners oral hygiene tip:

Always keep a mini toothbrush and toothpaste in your everyday bag so that you can maintain your oral hygiene on the go.

Clear Aligners as an aesthetic alternative to metal braces

Your teeth will move throughout the duration of your life. They’re constantly vying for space in your mouth and shifting around to function better, which is why orthodontics has become such a popular dental field in South Africa. Every day, more and more people weigh out the pros and cons of braces and opt to live with their flawed smiles rather than endure the years of treatment, the bulky metal look of it and the painful tightenings.

What if there was a dental treatment that offered you straighter teeth without the uncomfortable metal wires and brackets? Something that you could slip on and off at will, so you would still look amazing at events and functions? Well, there is! It’s called Clear Aligners.

What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are a more comfortable alternative to braces and have recently taken South Africa by storm. This orthodontic miracle will straighten your teeth without the use of bulky metal braces. The clear trays slip on and off the teeth (like a retainer) and are made from clear, hard plastic so it looks natural in your mouth. The best part is that you do not need to wear them constantly – you can remove them at will. Understandably, the more you wear them, the faster your treatment will progress so we recommend keeping them in a majority of the time, but this can be discussed during your consultation with Dr Serfontein.

Why choose clear aligners

If you’re looking for a discreet alternative to braces, you should strongly consider clear aligner treatment. This technology uses clear plastic aligner trays to slowly move your teeth into their correct positions. It also shifts teeth to fix gaps, crowding and, in some cases, buck teeth and has been able to fix bite issues and improve jaw function in patients.

If you’re interested in an Orthodontic solution for your misaligned or gapped teeth, Clear Aligners may be the answer. Contact Dr J. J. Got Gaps? Get rid of them with clear aligners

Gap teeth are quite the fashion statement at the moment, with models such as Lily Aldridge, Vanessa Paradis and Georgia May Jagger inspiring people around the world to embrace the spaces between their teeth. Unfortunately, not everyone is comfortable flaunting their “flaws”, and while some people have grown to love their gapped teeth, others may be looking for the best way to get rid of it.

The answer is Clear Aligners. Thanks to this revolutionary invention, you can have the flawless smile you’ve always dreamed of.

What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are quickly becoming the most popular orthodontic treatment available today. Instead of using metal brackets and wires to shift the teeth, they have a series of custom-made clear plastic trays.

Each tray is worn for about 2 weeks until the teeth are aligned sufficiently. Then you move on to the next tray and so forth until your teeth are perfectly aligned and your gaps have been eliminated.

Clear Aligners vs Metal Braces

More and more people are choosing clear aligners to fix the spacing in their smile, and it’s no wonder because it offers a number of advantages compared to traditional metal braces:

  • Subtle Appearance: The trays themselves are practically invisible when worn on the teeth, meaning you won’t have to worry about other people noticing them. Only you and your dentist will know that you’re straightening your teeth!
  • Comfortable: Every clear aligner treatment is custom-made for each patient using smooth plastic that fits easily among the gums and teeth.
  • Convenient: The trays are removable, so you can take them out whenever you need to brush your teeth or eat, meaning you can still enjoy your favourites throughout treatment!
  • Fast: Braces usually need about two to three years to address spacing issues, but clear aligners can accomplish the same in about 8-18 months!
