Teeth Whitening — A quick boost for dull teeth

What does it fix?

Teeth can become discoloured or stained over time due to various factors like coffee, red wine, and smoking. Teeth whitening is an efficient solution to remove these stubborn stains and boost your smile in the summer sun.

The benefits

  • Instant results: We can brighten your teeth in just one session by several shades.
  • Boosted self-confidence: A whiter smile can boost self-esteem, making one more willing to share their smile.

Signature JJS Veneers — The pathway to a flawless summer smile

What do they fix?

Veneers are porcelain or composite resin shells that adhere to the front surface of the teeth. They’re perfect for addressing chipped or broken teeth, severe discolouration, and uneven or misshapen teeth.

The benefits

  • Durability: With proper care, veneers can last up to 15 years.
  • Natural appearance: They’re custom-made to match the colour and shape of your natural teeth.
  • Stain resistance: Unlike natural teeth, porcelain is resistant to staining.

Dental Bonding — A cost-effective makeover

What does it fix?

Dental bonding uses a tooth-coloured composite resin to fix imperfections like small chips or cracks, gaps between the teeth, and discoloured teeth.

The benefits

  • Minimally invasive: Little to no removal of enamel is required.
  • Quick procedure: Dental bonding is often completed in a single visit.
  • Affordability: It’s generally less expensive than other cosmetic treatments.

Clear Aligners — Straightening teeth discreetly

What do they fix?

Clear aligners offer a clear alternative to braces, effectively addressing crooked or misaligned teeth, bite issues and crowded teeth.

The benefits

  • Nearly invisible: Clear aligners are discreet, making them a favourite among adults.
  • Removable: Unlike traditional braces, you can remove clear aligners while eating or for special occasions.
  • Comfort: They tend to be more comfortable without metal wires or brackets.

Smile Makeover — Comprehensive transformation

How will it help me?

A smile makeover is a comprehensive approach to completely transform your smile. It can address multiple concerns, from discolouration to alignment, combining various treatments tailored to your individual needs.

The benefits

  • Personalised approach: The procedures are tailored to meet individual aesthetic goals.
  • Comprehensive results: Addresses multiple issues simultaneously for a complete transformation.
  • Increased confidence: A total smile makeover can lead to a remarkable boost in self-esteem and overall satisfaction.

Veneers vs Crowns

Veneers vs Crowns: Your ultimate guide to a show-stopping smile

When it comes to enhancing your smile, the world of cosmetic dentistry offers a multitude of options. Two of the most popular treatments are dental veneers and crowns. But what’s the difference between the two, and which one is right for you?

Let’s dive in and decode these smile transformers!

What are dental veneers?

Consider dental veneers the ‘Hollywood’ secret to a glamorous, red-carpet-worthy smile. These ultra-thin porcelain shells are custom-made to fit precisely over the front of your teeth.

They’re like the magic wand of cosmetic dentistry — masking discolourations, closing gaps, and correcting minor misalignments, all with a natural-looking finish.

Learn more about our JJS Signature Veneers here!

What are dental crowns?

On the other hand, dental crowns (appropriately named as they indeed are the ‘crown jewel’ of restorative dentistry) are more like a protective helmet for your tooth. They cover the entire tooth, not just the front, and are typically used when a tooth is significantly damaged or decayed.

Crowns restore strength, shape and function, all while giving your tooth a visual makeover.

The showdown: veneers vs crowns

So, how do you choose between veneers and crowns? First, let’s consider a few key factors:

1. Purpose

The choice between veneers and crowns boils down to the purpose of the procedure. If you’re looking to correct minor cosmetic issues — think discolouration, small gaps, or slight misalignments — veneers are your go-to. They’re primarily a cosmetic solution.

However, a crown is usually the better option if your tooth has significant decay, a large filling or is cracked or broken. It’s a restorative solution that offers both aesthetic and functional benefits.

2. Tooth preparation

In the world of dentistry, preserving natural tooth structure is always a top priority. Veneers win this round as they require less tooth preparation compared to crowns. Only a thin layer of enamel is removed to fit the veneer (none if it’s done with composite resin), whereas a crown requires the tooth to be significantly reduced in size to accommodate it.

3. Durability

While both veneers and crowns are made from durable materials designed to withstand biting and chewing, crowns generally offer more strength and longevity. They cover the entire tooth, providing more structural support, especially for heavily filed or broken teeth.

4. Cost

In general, crowns and veneers are comparable in cost, but this can vary depending on individual circumstances. When deciding, it’s essential to consider the long-term benefits and potential future costs of replacement.

So, which is it?

When it comes to choosing between veneers and crowns, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Instead, it’s all about assessing your individual needs, oral health condition, and aesthetic goals. As always, a consultation with your dentist is the best place to start. They’ll guide you towards the solution that’s perfect for your smile!

At JJS Dentistry, we’re committed to helping you achieve the smile of your dreams. Whether it’s veneers, crowns or another dental solution, we ensure you receive the highest quality care. Remember, your smile is your superpower — let’s make it shine!

Digital Dentistry

What does digital dentistry involve?

Technological advancements have been a game-changer for many industries, and dentistry is no exception. In recent years, many dentist practices have chosen to go digital for some procedures because of the advantages it has on overall patient experience and efficiency.

Essentially, digital dentistry refers to the use of technologies and devices to carry out treatments that would typically require mechanical or electrical tools. These devices can be used to examine, diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions or diseases you might have.

There are many areas of digital dentistry and many more that are still being developed, but there are a few common treatments that you may come across in your next appointment:

Digital injections

Many types of dental treatments rely on anaesthetic injections. If you’re not comfortable receiving dental injections, it may affect your treatment.

The Wand is a computer-controlled dental-injection anaesthesia system that places the numbing solution slower than is humanly possible.

It is the most effective way to numb an area because of its slow, steady anaesthetic delivery. This also means less discomfort because the sting from an injection usually comes from the solution being delivered too quickly.

Intraoral camera

Cutting-edge intraoral camera technology allows dentists to visually examine your entire mouth using a small, hand-held device.

The camera immediately projects sharp, high-resolution images of your mouth onto a screen for you to view. Not only does this help your dentist with diagnostics and treatment, but it also enables patients to understand their oral health issues better.

Diode lasers

Laser technology is one of the latest advances in dentistry. The Diode laser delivers energy in the form of a high-powered light.

Depending on the intended outcome, this energy moves at different wavelengths before it is absorbed or reflected by a “target.” These targets are usually enamel, decay, or gum tissue in dentistry. Each one absorbs a specific wavelength of light while reflecting others.

Unlike with dental drills, there is no heat or vibration with laser dentistry, making the procedure quite comfortable for most patients.

It eliminates the need for suturing for soft-tissue procedures, and healing is much faster. In addition, diode lasers are safe and effective for treating both children and adults.

CAD/CAM technology & CEREC

CAD/CAM technology makes it possible for dentists to perform complex restorations faster, more efficiently, and accurately. For example, dental prostheses can be created and fitted in a single visit using CAD/CAM technology known as CEREC. CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics” and is customarily used to simplify dental procedures like crowns, implants, and bridges. CEREC machines make use of 3D-imaging software to make accurate and detailed replication of your teeth. The software will then highlight the areas that need to be restored and work creating the restorative piece from a ceramic block. This process is usually complete within 20 minutes.

Digital radiography

The Rextar Handheld X-ray Unit is a convenient and efficient device for digital imaging.

To take a conventional dental X-ray, dentists have to position devices and place sensors or film in the patients’ mouths. Due to the weight, function and distribution of buttons, conventional X-ray equipment should be handled by both hands, making it difficult to manoeuvre and manage.

The Rextar devices have been designed with patients in mind. It is compact in size and lightweight so that dentists can get the best possible x-rays without repeated exposure.

Digital impressions

Why we use digital impressions at our practice

Digital impressions are more accurate and more dependable than old “putty”. They’re also more comfortable and less of a daunting experience for patients. In this blog, we’ll take a look at how digital impressions work and why we use them.

What is a digital dental impression?

A dental impression is an accurate mould of an individual’s teeth. Traditionally, this is complete using casting materials to create a negative imprint of the teeth. The imprint is then used to create a replica of the teeth’s shape. Modern advances in technology mean that we can now create virtual impressions of the hard and soft tissues in the mouth using special scanning devices. These digital impressions are highly accurate and can be complete in minutes, with minimum discomfort for the patient.

What does a digital dental impression involve?

You will receive an anaesthetic, and we dust your teeth with special titanium dioxide powder in order to scan. This allows Dr Serfontein to create a powder-free, 3D image of your teeth. We capture the digital impression using an intraoral wand that is inserted into your mouth and moved over the surface of the teeth. Our digital impressions also use a chairside monitor to display the impression image as it is captured. So, you can see the images as they’re captured!

Benefits of Digital Impressions vs Traditional Impressions

Digital impressions mean greater comfort

As a patient, the main benefit of digital impressions is comfort. Traditional impressions can be rather uncomfortable with their sticky putty and large plastic trays. The hard, long, hard sides of the tray extend far back in your mouth, which can cause a gag reflex. In addition, when the putty is removed, it can leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Digital impressions, on the other hand, uses an intraoral scanner slim wand- no putty, trays or gagging.

The scan itself is complete in just a few minutes. There’s taste and no mess to worry about. The result is a more pleasant and relaxing experience for you.

Digital impressions equal greater accuracy

Putty impressions create a “negative impression” of the teeth. To see how the teeth really look, the dentist fills the impression  with clay-like material to form the 3D “positive” mould. All that modelling allows for small errors and imperfections that can interfere with your treatment plan. Digital impressions are free from these errors as they rely solely on the images captured during the scan. Since dental treatment is unique to every patient, starting with the most accurate data is essential to achieve good results.

Easily shareable

Digital impressions are on a computer, so Dr Serfontein can share them with the dental lab or fabricator straight away. Faster retrieval of your data means your dental restorations will arrive quicker.

You’ll be able to start and finish treatment much sooner. Also, keeping those images on the computer lets Dr Serfontein access them easily throughout your treatment, so he can reference them as needed.

Greener alternative

Plastic trays and putty, and plastic used in traditional impressions wind up in the landfill eventually. Digital images are on a computer, so they don’t add to pollution.

Find out more about our advanced technology

Digital impressions rely on the most advanced dental technology. This means they’re not available at every practice. As a top dental practice in Cape Town, JJS Dentistry uses digital technology to create customised treatment plans for all patients. In addition, Dr JJ Serfontein has experience treating people from all across the world.

dental bonding

Is dental bonding suitable for me?

Dental bonding offers a painless and simple way to beautify and strengthen your smile. By spreading a thin layer of resin to the surface of teeth, your smile can go from lacklustre to brilliant in just one appointment. The bonding process fixes damaged teeth, repairs chips, banishes discolourations and fixes cracks. Bonding can also enhance the shape, colour, and size of your teeth for a more harmonious look. The end result is a healthy, natural smile with no sign of damage or stains. If you have relatively healthy teeth, bonding might be all you need to enhance your smile!

Who can benefit from dental bonding?

For minor cosmetic concerns, bonding is an affordable and simple alternative to veneers, crowns, or orthodontics.

Common issues treated by bonding include:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Discoloured teeth that don’t whiten with whitening treatments
  • Slight gaps between teeth
  • “Short teeth” or worn-down surfaces
  • Minor decay

Dental bonding may not be suitable for you if:

  • Your bite is misaligned and needs adjustment (for example, from an overbite.
  • There is inadequate material remaining in your natural tooth to build up from.

The costs involved in dental bonding

When deciding on dental treatment, the cost is often a major consideration. Luckily, dental bonding is a very cost-effective option compared to dental implants, veneers and crowns. In fact, veneers usually cost twice to three times as much as bonding.

Dental bonding procedure

The dentist prepares the tooth for the procedure by lightly etching the surface and applying a bonding liquid. Once the liquid sets, a plastic resin blends with your tooth’s colour. The dentist applies and sculpts the resin into the desired shape by the dentist. After hardening the resin with a curing light, the dentist trims, smoothes, and polishes it to a natural appearance. It usually takes about an hour to complete the procedure for one tooth. If you’re having more than one tooth bonded, you may need to schedule several visits.

Caring for Your Bonded Teeth

After your bonding treatment, it’s important to take excellent care of your newly restored teeth. Be sure to brush, floss, and attend regular dental visits. Also, avoid chewing on hard foods or objects that may chip the bonding material.

Bear in mind that the composite material can stain more easily than the natural tooth. To prevent staining, it’s best to keep a close eye on your intake of substances such as tea, red wine and coffee. If you’re a frequent consumer of these beverages, you may wish to consider other treatment options to prevent uneven discolouration.

The longevity of this dental solution depends on your oral hygiene habits, the extensiveness of the repairs, and the type of material used. Generally, you can expect your bonding treatment to last anywhere from three to seven years. Dr Serfontein can make any necessary touch-ups or repairs during a routine office visit.

Why opt for dental bonding?

Bonding is among the easiest and least expensive cosmetic dentistry. Unlike crowns and veneers, bonding usually can be done in one office visit unless several teeth are bonded. Another advantage is that the dentist removes very little tooth enamel . Also, unless dental bonding is done to fill a cavity, you usually do not need anaesthesia.

Consultation for dental bonding

Serving the Cape Town area and overseas for many years, Dr JJ Serfontein is an experienced cosmetic dentist dedicated to providing top-notch care. During your initial visit, Dr Serfontein will answer all your questions and perform a dental evaluation to decide on the best treatment option together.

How to deal with tooth wear

How to deal with tooth wear

Did you know that tooth enamel is the hardest structure in the body? That’s right. It’s even harder than bone! Enamel is meant to withstand a lifetime of chewing forces and biting. However, various types of tooth wear can occur over time. Wear and tear is the irreversible loss of tooth structure, which is often unsightly, painful, and hinders the function of teeth. In this blog, we take a look at the causes of tooth wear and how we treat it.

Types of tooth wear

Dental erosion usually occurs when acid comes in contact with the teeth. However, there are three different kinds of tooth wear:

Attrition

Attrition refers to wear caused by tooth-to-tooth contact. It usually occurs where the teeth meet on the biting edges. Attrition on front teeth results in wear patterns on both the top and bottom teeth. Bruxism (tooth grinding) is the main cause of this type of tooth wear.

Abfraction

Abfraction occurs when a misaligned bite or regular grinding create abnormal pressure on the tooth. This results in a notch forming on the side of the tooth near the gum line.

Abrasion

Abrasion is similar to abfraction, but it is caused by an external mechanical force, such as a toothbrush. If you brush too hard against the surface of the tooth or use a toothbrush with hard bristles, the constant wear and tear can cause a notch-like surface at the gum line.

Symptoms of tooth wear

The symptoms of erosion include:

  • Teeth appear to become shorter
  • Teeth appear glazed and smooth (due to the tooth surface being worn away)
  • Fillings sit higher than the surrounding tooth surface
  • The chewing surfaces of the teeth showing smooth, concave craters
  • Sensitive teeth.
  • Teeth appearing yellow (due to darker coloured tissue showing through thinning enamel)

How to prevent enamel loss

Avoid acidic foods

Excessive acid can be detrimental to the health of your teeth. Acid can eat through your teeth’s strong enamel and expose the softer insides of your teeth and create cavities for bacteria to grow and hide in.

Wear a nightguard if your dentist recommends one

Some people clench or grind their teeth, and they don’t even know it, especially at night. Bruxism can cause toothaches and other symptoms such as worn enamel and tooth sensitivity. All these symptoms make your teeth more vulnerable to tooth decay, cracks, and chips. If you’ve been diagnosed with bruxism and have a nightguard, wear it to prevent future problems.

Don’t chew on things you shouldn’t

This may sound like the kind of advice we would give to a child, but it applies to people of all ages. While wood, plastic, or fingernails may not feel hard enough to cause damage, chewing on these materials a lot can wear your teeth. This leads to toothaches and enamel loss. Chewing on ice is also a major no-no. Many people say the act of chewing helps them think. If that’s the case, we suggest you opt for sugar-free gum instead.

Treatment options for tooth wear

For minor abfractions or abrasions, we will likely place a filling on the side of the tooth over the damaged surface to help protect against continued wear. Alternatively, we may use fluoride treatment at your six-month preventive care appointments. We will continue to monitor the site of the wear to ensure it doesn’t worsen. For more serious cases, we may consider the use of crowns, bridges or veneers to restore the functionality and aesthetics of your smile.

Clear braces

3 things to know about getting clear braces

If you’ve considered getting orthodontics to align your teeth, the inconvenience of traditional braces may have impacted your decision to take the plunge. Thankfully, Dr JJ Serfontein at JJS Dentistry in Cape Town offers a new solution for people who want to align their teeth without traditional braces’ inconveniences.

Clear braces are a revolutionary orthodontics system. It offers all the benefits of traditional braces without discomfort and aesthetic impact. You can easily remove the aligners when eating or during important events and put them back in at your convenience. You can learn more about the processes involved here.

It sounds phenomenal – but there are some essential things you need to consider if you’re planning on orthodontic treatment:

1. Clear braces are not a suitable treatment for every case.

Clear Aligners works for patients who need mild to moderate levels of correction to misaligned teeth. If you require more severe intervention for your smile to align, clear braces may not work for you. The good news is that there are many options at JJS Dentistry – feel free to give us a call and schedule a consultation if you’re interested in Orthodontic treatment. We’ll explain all your options and guide you through the process.

2. Getting clear braces is not a short process.

Based on your unique case, your Clear Aligners treatment may take months or even years to conclude. It is not a quick-fix solution for misaligned teeth. The benefit is that you can remove the aligner tray when eating or for events, so no one will ever know that you’re wearing orthodontic devices.

3. Clear braces are a hands-on treatment.

Your aligner trays will need to be swapped regularly, depending on your progress, which means that you will need multiple appointments with your orthodontist throughout your treatment. At JJS Dentistry, we can map out your treatment plan so you know what you’re committing to before you start.

Clear Aligners vs Traditional Braces

If you’re considering orthodontics, Clear Aligners is a convenient option with an aesthetic benefit – but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work just as well as traditional braces. In some cases, Clear Aligners can correct misalignment faster than conventional braces can! During your consultation at JJS Dentistry, we can go over all your options and discuss each’s pros and cons to help you make the best decision.

woman holding Clear Aligners tray

Clear Aligners at JJS Dentistry

Clear aligners are an alternative to traditional braces that gently straighten teeth and correct alignment issues. They are a clear set of plastic alignment trays that are more subtle in appearance and safer to use than traditional metal braces.

These clear alignment trays are designed especially for you and your specific dental needs. They are to be worn throughout the day, except while eating or brushing your teeth. Each alignment tray is worn for roughly two weeks before moving on to the next tray. The benefits of clear aligners include no food restrictions, normal oral hygiene methods, fewer office visits and shorter treatment time.

Clear braces are best suited for adults and teenagers and can be used to treat a variety of straightening issues, such as overcrowding, wide spacing between teeth, crossbite, overbite and underbite. Correcting these issues with aligners can reduce the chances of gum disease and abnormal strain on teeth.

Dr JJ Serfontein invites you to schedule a consultation to discuss your teeth straightening needs.

The clear aligner process can be summarised as follows:

First, impressions will be taken to ensure that clear braces are the best option for you. Next, a detailed treatment plan is developed to give you an idea of the final result. The custom aligners are then designed and your progress will be monitored, ensuring that you are comfortable and progressing well.

If this sounds like an exciting possibility for you, we encourage you to book your consultation right away. Clear braces can improve your appearance and, as a result, improve your confidence. This is our passion.

The sooner you get in touch, the sooner you can be on your way to achieving a healthier and more beautiful smile.

How dental implants can drastically improve your life

How dental implants can drastically improve your life

In the popular makeover tv show MooiMaak, Dr JJ Serfontein improves the lives of guests by transforming their unique smiles. One particular participant, Yolande, was over the moon to say goodbye to the gaps in her teeth. The improvement in her teeth and gums also had a positive effect on the beauty of her face. We achieved this amazing look by replacing her missing teeth with dental implants.

Just like Yolande, you too, can get the smile of your dreams.

Let’s take a look at how dental implants can enhance your smile and your oral health.

Dental implants instantly enhance your smile

Having missing teeth can present a lot of problems for someone who loves to show off their smile. If you are self-conscious about the gaps in your teeth, or you tend to hide them in pictures, dental implants can help. A healthy, beautiful smile does more than just alter your appearance; it can truly boost your confidence.

Dental implants make you look more youthful

Missing teeth can lead to jaw collapse and shrinkage- factors that can alter the lower face and make it look more aged. To fix this issue, we place dental implants into the jaw and these function as brand new tooth roots. The implants prevent the body from absorbing the minerals from the area around a missing tooth, which helps keep the facial structure intact. Dental implants also add support to the lips to ensure plumper lips and more a youthful look in that area.

You can enjoy all your favourite foods

Replacing your teeth with implants can improve your bite force remarkably since implants integrate with your jawbone and help to improve your chewing muscles. After your dental implant procedure, you will need to eat soft foods for a while. However, once you have fully healed from the procedure, you will be able to eat and enjoy all the foods you love. You’ll also be able to reintroduce more nutritious foods back into your diet.

Dental implants allow you to speak properly

Gaps between teeth can also cause lisps. Air is also able to escape when you make sounds, resulting in a whistling sound. Dental implants will stay in place since they connect to your jawbone. Because of this, it will be easier to speak clearly and with confidence.

Dental implants improve oral health

Did you know that implants can help prevent future tooth loss?

Worn and old jawbones can cause the tooth roots on either side of the weak portion of the jawbone to be less stable, and that means those teeth are a lot more likely to fall out.

Gaps that are too large also create plaque traps, because food and debris have an increased amount of space in order to collect. They begin to develop harmful bacteria that eventually hardens on your teeth and gums. This can easily lead to tooth decay or gum disease.

Since implants are embedded into your jawbone, the metal post acts as an artificial root, stimulating the bone replacement cycle to help replace worn bone tissue and keep the jawbone healthy and strong. The result is healthier teeth and gums, with a decreased risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Emax veneers: the future of dentistry

Emax veneers: the future of dentistry

Veneers are thin layers of tooth-coloured material that we bond to the front surface of discoloured or damaged teeth. The goal is to correct various teeth problems. Emax porcelain veneers are the types of veneers that we most recommended for our patients. The reason for this; they give your teeth the natural translucence and lustre of a healthy smile.

Emax porcelain veneers are made from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic.

This material is well-known for its superior strength, even when cut into very thin slices. We adjust the clear ceramic’s transparency and light diffusion properties to replicate the structure of your natural tooth. The result is an unnoticeable restoration.

When do we use Emax veneers?

Patients who want to enhance their appearance by improving the aesthetic quality and structure of teeth may benefit from Emax. Adults with misaligned, misshaped or crooked teeth are also good candidates.

In addition, those with chipped teeth and teeth with inconsistent spacing and gaps can benefit. In some cases, we use Emax veneers as an alternative to teeth whitening. Emax not only re-shapes but also masks tooth discolouration and staining.

The veneer process

At your first appointment, we will evaluate your tooth structure, facial features and bite to determine whether Emax is suitable for your case. Next, we will design custom Emax porcelain veneers for your teeth, giving you the option to “try your new smile” and see what the final outcome will be once you receive your permanent veneers.

At this stage, you can choose to change the size, shape or shade of your teeth to enhance your smile. If your teeth are unevenly stained, we may use multiple layers of veneers for the teeth that have more stains. This will help create a more uniform look.

Once you are happy with your brand new smile, we will send the design to the laboratory, where they will create your veneers. In 1-2 weeks, you will return to our office. Finally, we will bond the veneers to your teeth with resin cement.

The benefits of Emax veneers

Minimal tooth removal: The placement of all types of veneers requires us to remove some tooth enamel to create room for bonding. However, since Emax veneers are considerably tougher and stronger than other veneers, we remove very little enamel. As a result, you will experience little to no discomfort during the veneer process.

You can match the colour of veneers to your existing teeth: This allows for a more natural-looking smile and seamless integration. You can choose a precise shade and colour of veneers to improve the colour of one or more stained teeth, giving you the desired smile.

Preserving your natural teeth: You can preserve more of your tooth’s structure. Also, your natural teeth do not become weaker. Bonding with Emax greatly improves the strength of the teeth.

You can adjust the size of your teeth: You can make subtle to moderate changes to your teeth depending on your needs. Emax veneers come in thicknesses of between 0.3mm and 0.5mm. On the other hand, conventional porcelain veneers have a minimum thickness of 0.5mm. The thinness of Emax veneers allows for more flexibility.

Greater durability: Traditional porcelain veneers are prone to chips and cracks because of their thickness. Emax veneers are thinner and harder, offering superior durability. They also last longer than other types of veneers.

More natural-looking: They allow more light, giving your teeth a more natural appeal. As a result, they will give you a boost of confidence, knowing that no one can tell you’re wearing dental veneers.

Are you interested in transforming your smile with veneers? Contact JJS Dentistry to find out if you qualify for our minimally invasive Emax veneers.

Smile makeover: A patient case study

Smile makeover: A patient case study

A smile makeover is a dental procedure that enhances the look and function of your teeth through the use of cosmetic and holistic and cosmetic dentistry. Some of the treatments used in a smile makeover are: orthodontics, dental veneers, tooth crowns, dental implants, teeth whitening and dental bonding.

Some people believe that it’s too late to straighten their teeth or get cosmetic procedures for a brighter smile. One of our patients proved that it’s never too late to improve your smile.

Let’s take a look at how we helped a patient achieve the smile of his dreams in a short space of time.

Short term orthodontics/6-month braces

Many adults want straighter teeth without the inconvenience of wearing braces for up to two years. Thankfully, a straighter, more beautiful smile can be yours in just a few short months- thanks to short term orthodontics

For our patient, we used 6-month braces to realign the front top and bottom teeth. During the consultation, Dr JJ Serfontein did a comprehensive examination of the patient’s gums, teeth, and oral health to determine if he was a candidate for short term braces. The examination includes taking intraoral and facial photographs, x-rays, and impressions of the teeth. Next, we sent the models off to the laboratory where they created his custom braces. At the next appointment, Dr JJ Serfontein installed the brackets and tooth-coloured and wires.

Once treatment was complete, our patient was able to flash his straighter teeth with confidence!

Gum lift

Our patient had gums that rested too high on his teeth, so we opted to give him a gum lift. A gum lift, otherwise known as gum contouring is a cosmetic dental procedure that reshapes and evens the gum line to enhance your smile’s appearance.

During the procedure, Dr JJ Serfontein uses a soft tissue laser or scalpel to remove excess gum tissue and resculpt the gum line to expose more of the tooth. Dr Serfontein then uses sutures to hold the gum tissue in place.

The procedure took around 1 to 2 hours to complete. The result was a gum line that was more in balance with the patient’s teeth.

Zoom teeth whitening

Our patient wanted a brighter, more youthful smile, so we gave him the Zoom! Whitening treatment.

The Zoom® Teeth Whitening method is comfortable and easy. First, we check if you’re a candidate for the teeth whitening treatment. Dr JJ Serfontein performs a dental consultation to detect any severe issues. We will attend to these issues before we can whiten your teeth.

During the procedure, we coated the patient’s gums with a gel for protection. We then applied a layer of the ZOOM! Whitening agent to the teeth. Finally, a specially-designed laser light was positioned to activate the whitening treatment.

The whitening treatment was done in four 15-minute sessions, leaving our patient’s teeth looking whiter and brighter than ever.

How smile makeovers transform your face

How smile makeovers transform your face

A beautiful, healthy smile does more than just change your appearance. It can truly boost your confidence and change your life for the better.

If you are self-conscious about your smile, or you tend to hide it in pictures, a smile makeover can help. With smile makeovers, we alter the shape of your teeth, the lining of your gums and align crooked teeth. The result is an aesthetically pleasing result that will compliment your facial features and structure.

Let’s take a look at how smile makeovers improve your appearance and boost your overall confidence.

Smile makeovers improve the look of your gums.

As we get older, our gums tend to shrink, so a certain degree of gum recession is normal. On the other hand, some people have gums that rest too high or low on their teeth. We call this a “gummy smile”. We use a smile makeover treatment called gum contouring to improve the look of your gums. Gum contouring is an advanced procedure that changes the shape of the gum line to even the gum line.

A smile makeover improves the appearance of your jawline.

Missing teeth can result in jaw collapse and shrinkage- factors that can alter the lower face and make it look more aged. We place dental bridges and dental implants into the jaw and function as brand new tooth roots. This stops the body from absorbing the minerals from the area around a missing tooth and keeps the facial structure intact. Depending on the extent of teeth damage, we may use dental crowns, bridges, to restore the visible portion of the teeth. This adds support to the lips to ensure plumper lips and more a youthful look in that area.

Smile makeovers can improve the appearance of your lips

Your smile is one of your most prominent facial features, and it aids in shaping the lower half of your face. Changes in tooth size or the narrowing of your jaw can allow the lips to sink in and lead to a more aged appearance. To solve this issue, orthodontic solutions such as Clear Aligners can be incredibly useful. Dental bridges, veneers, crowns and implants can also restore fullness to the lips by replacing missing teeth. They lengthen the visible portion of the teeth, helping to lift the lips and produce fullness to the area around the mouth.

A Smile Makeover Targets Wrinkles and Folds

Our teeth and skin develop together during our teenage and young adult years. They are proportioned to fit and blend in with one another. However, as teeth get worn down, the lower third of the face can actually shrink, while the skin remains the same. This forces the skin to hand down or fold, creating folds and wrinkles around the mouth,

When we reconstruct your smile as part of a smile makeover, we are able to restore the youthful proportions of your face. Using a better match between your skin and jaws, you will see a big improvement in these concerns.

Know Before You Go: Teeth Whitening

When you think of cosmetic dental treatments, teeth whitening may be one of the very first dental services that come to mind. But what happens to your teeth when you undergo a whitening treatment?

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening consists of a scientific process. To understand the process, you must first recognise that your teeth have different layers. These layers absorb stains into your teeth, and the bleaching products that dentists use lift those stains out of the first layer.

What are the Layers of Teeth?

  • Enamel—The enamel layer is the outermost layer of your teeth. It’s one of the hardest substances that your body makes, and it works to protect the sensitive inner layers of your teeth. Enamel is the first layer that absorbs stains.
  • Dentin—The dentin layer of your teeth lives right below the enamel. The majority of the tooth structure is made up of dentin and it is very porous, so it absorbs materials very easily. Stains that seep deeply into this layer, create more permanent dark marks on teeth. Whitening products could remove stains from this layer, although it is more difficult.
  • Root and Pulp—These parts of your teeth aren’t susceptible to staining, but they are very sensitive. When you have whitening treatment, you may experience a little bit of sensitivity for a while because all layers of your teeth are affected by the bleaching products.

Should you get professional teeth whitening?

understanding the makeup of the tooth structure helps us to understand how stains affect teeth on a molecular level, so you can understand why it’s so important to get your cosmetic treatments from a qualified and reliable dentist. At-home whitening solutions may provide some shine, but they will not be able to penetrate the layers of your teeth and offer true, lasting results.

How Teeth Grinding and Clenching Can Impact Your Smile

During your dental checkup, your dentist may see signs that you grind or clench your teeth, a common condition called Bruxism. You may realize that you’ve been clenching your teeth a lot lately, perhaps due to stress. Or maybe you grind your teeth while sleeping. These two things may seem insignificant at first, but they actually can have a notable impact on your smile in the long run.

Bruxism and your Teeth

Your teeth can take quite a bit of pressure to chew and grind your food. However, if you regularly clench or grind your teeth outside of eating, they can begin to be affected in distinct ways. The protective film of enamel can wear down, showing the layer of dentin beneath. Not only is this layer yellow, making your teeth look dull, but it also contains tubules that join to the nerves of the tooth. As a result, you may experience tooth sensitivity. Or worse, your tooth could eventually become so weak that it cracks or breaks.

Dental restorations, such as fillings and crowns, can also be susceptible to damage from Bruxism. To protect your teeth and restorations from additional wear, you need to treat grinding or clenching.

How Bruxism affects the Jaw and Head

Clenching and grinding affect more than just teeth. If you do this while you sleep, you can experience headaches, jaw pain, and other ill effects – particularly in the morning. That’s because these actions put a lot of pressure on the jaw joint, called the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Bruxism can also cause the jaw joint to become misaligned, and when the TMJ is not aligned correctly, it can affect your ability to use your jaw in normal functions and impact your quality of life.

JJS Dentistry can help

Fortunately, TMJ Therapy can help. To address Bruxism, your JJS Dentistry can provide a custom-made oral device that you can wear at night. The device keeps your top and bottom teeth from hitting each other and causing additional damage. It can also help to re-establish the proper alignment for your jaw, relieving the source of your TMJ pain.

In the end, to protect your oral and overall health, it is worth the time and effort to have your Bruxism treated. JJS Dentistry can offer a solution that can spare your teeth and jaw from excessive pressure, allowing you to focus on other meaningful things in life.
