Teeth Whitening — A quick boost for dull teeth

What does it fix?

Teeth can become discoloured or stained over time due to various factors like coffee, red wine, and smoking. Teeth whitening is an efficient solution to remove these stubborn stains and boost your smile in the summer sun.

The benefits

  • Instant results: We can brighten your teeth in just one session by several shades.
  • Boosted self-confidence: A whiter smile can boost self-esteem, making one more willing to share their smile.

Signature JJS Veneers — The pathway to a flawless summer smile

What do they fix?

Veneers are porcelain or composite resin shells that adhere to the front surface of the teeth. They’re perfect for addressing chipped or broken teeth, severe discolouration, and uneven or misshapen teeth.

The benefits

  • Durability: With proper care, veneers can last up to 15 years.
  • Natural appearance: They’re custom-made to match the colour and shape of your natural teeth.
  • Stain resistance: Unlike natural teeth, porcelain is resistant to staining.

Dental Bonding — A cost-effective makeover

What does it fix?

Dental bonding uses a tooth-coloured composite resin to fix imperfections like small chips or cracks, gaps between the teeth, and discoloured teeth.

The benefits

  • Minimally invasive: Little to no removal of enamel is required.
  • Quick procedure: Dental bonding is often completed in a single visit.
  • Affordability: It’s generally less expensive than other cosmetic treatments.

Clear Aligners — Straightening teeth discreetly

What do they fix?

Clear aligners offer a clear alternative to braces, effectively addressing crooked or misaligned teeth, bite issues and crowded teeth.

The benefits

  • Nearly invisible: Clear aligners are discreet, making them a favourite among adults.
  • Removable: Unlike traditional braces, you can remove clear aligners while eating or for special occasions.
  • Comfort: They tend to be more comfortable without metal wires or brackets.

Smile Makeover — Comprehensive transformation

How will it help me?

Teeth whitening

What you need to know about at-home teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is quickly becoming a popular and more accessible cosmetic treatment for those seeking a whiter and brighter smile. By using advanced bleaching agents and laser light technology, teeth whitening can lighten your teeth by up to 8 shades.

How does teeth whitening work?

At JJS Dentistry, we provide both professional in-chair bleaching and take-home whitening kits that help you achieve your desired results. For in-chair bleaching, we use the renowned Philips Zoom® Teeth Whitening method, a leading bleaching treatment recommended and used by dental professionals worldwide.

Before the teeth whitening treatment can begin, your gums need to be covered by a special agent to protect them from the bleaching agent. The whitening gel is then applied to a tray that fits over your teeth, and a special laser light is applied to activate the agent. During this process, the whitening agents break down the discoloured molecules in your teeth and cause oxygen molecules to spread, leaving your teeth whiter and brighter.

How do at-home kits work?

At-home teeth whitening kits work similarly to in-chair bleaching, but you will do all the work yourself. This allows you the convenience of doing the treatment in your own home and at your leisure. However, your oral hygienist needs to explain the process thoroughly and show you how to use the kit to avoid causing damage to your teeth.

Take-home whitening kits contain different strengths of hydrogen peroxide that you apply to your custom trays and wear for 15-45 minutes, depending on the strength of the gel. Your oral hygienist will advise on a strength for you and how to use the kit.

Receiving your teeth whitening kit

The first step with teeth whitening is determining if you are a candidate. You will need to consult your oral hygienist to determine if you are a candidate and what treatment would work best for you.

Teeth whitening does not remove harsh stains and won’t work on dental prosthetics or false teeth, such as dentures and crowns. Therefore, you need to have all your natural teeth intact and healthy gums to do both in-chair bleaching and at-home whitening.

Your oral hygienist will also suggest a cleaning at least a week before receiving your teeth whitening treatment to remove surface build-up and ensure your teeth are in the best shape to be whitened.

The next step is creating your custom mouth trays that you will apply the whitening agent to and wear for 15-45 minutes. Your oral hygienist will give you an in-depth breakdown of how to use the kit and the precautions to take. During the consultation, they will also demonstrate how the kit works by taking you through the process. Your oral hygienist will demonstrate how to apply the gel, insert the trays, and use the accelerating laser light.

Risks of at-home teeth whitening

Although convenient and cost-effective, at-home teeth whitening puts you at greater risk of developing dental and general health issues. That’s why it’s essential to only use renowned take-home products from qualified and trusted dental professionals, such as those at JJS Dentistry. We will work with you to ensure you achieve the desired results while ensuring your safety.

Some risks associated with at-home teeth whitening include:

  • Damaged enamel: Harsh chemicals in cheaper take-home kits include chemical agents that can strip the enamel and leave the teeth vulnerable to damage.
  • Chemical burns: Custom trays are essential as, with an ill-fitting tray, the gel may leak and cause chemical burns on your mouth or skin.
  • Infections: Chemical burns, cuts or damage in your mouth can lead to infections when exposed to whitening agents.
  • Gum damage: Prolonged use of take-home whitening kits can damage the soft tissue in the mouth and a permanent receding gum line.

Smile makeover: A patient case study

Smile makeover: A patient case study

A smile makeover is a dental procedure that enhances the look and function of your teeth through the use of cosmetic and holistic and cosmetic dentistry. Some of the treatments used in a smile makeover are: orthodontics, dental veneers, tooth crowns, dental implants, teeth whitening and dental bonding.

Some people believe that it’s too late to straighten their teeth or get cosmetic procedures for a brighter smile. One of our patients proved that it’s never too late to improve your smile.

Let’s take a look at how we helped a patient achieve the smile of his dreams in a short space of time.

Short term orthodontics/6-month braces

Many adults want straighter teeth without the inconvenience of wearing braces for up to two years. Thankfully, a straighter, more beautiful smile can be yours in just a few short months- thanks to short term orthodontics

For our patient, we used 6-month braces to realign the front top and bottom teeth. During the consultation, Dr JJ Serfontein did a comprehensive examination of the patient’s gums, teeth, and oral health to determine if he was a candidate for short term braces. The examination includes taking intraoral and facial photographs, x-rays, and impressions of the teeth. Next, we sent the models off to the laboratory where they created his custom braces. At the next appointment, Dr JJ Serfontein installed the brackets and tooth-coloured and wires.

Once treatment was complete, our patient was able to flash his straighter teeth with confidence!

Gum lift

Our patient had gums that rested too high on his teeth, so we opted to give him a gum lift. A gum lift, otherwise known as gum contouring is a cosmetic dental procedure that reshapes and evens the gum line to enhance your smile’s appearance.

During the procedure, Dr JJ Serfontein uses a soft tissue laser or scalpel to remove excess gum tissue and resculpt the gum line to expose more of the tooth. Dr Serfontein then uses sutures to hold the gum tissue in place.

The procedure took around 1 to 2 hours to complete. The result was a gum line that was more in balance with the patient’s teeth.

Zoom teeth whitening

Our patient wanted a brighter, more youthful smile, so we gave him the Zoom! Whitening treatment.

The Zoom® Teeth Whitening method is comfortable and easy. First, we check if you’re a candidate for the teeth whitening treatment. Dr JJ Serfontein performs a dental consultation to detect any severe issues. We will attend to these issues before we can whiten your teeth.

During the procedure, we coated the patient’s gums with a gel for protection. We then applied a layer of the ZOOM! Whitening agent to the teeth. Finally, a specially-designed laser light was positioned to activate the whitening treatment.

The whitening treatment was done in four 15-minute sessions, leaving our patient’s teeth looking whiter and brighter than ever.

Know Before You Go: Teeth Whitening

When you think of cosmetic dental treatments, teeth whitening may be one of the very first dental services that come to mind. But what happens to your teeth when you undergo a whitening treatment?

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening consists of a scientific process. To understand the process, you must first recognise that your teeth have different layers. These layers absorb stains into your teeth, and the bleaching products that dentists use lift those stains out of the first layer.

What are the Layers of Teeth?

  • Enamel—The enamel layer is the outermost layer of your teeth. It’s one of the hardest substances that your body makes, and it works to protect the sensitive inner layers of your teeth. Enamel is the first layer that absorbs stains.
  • Dentin—The dentin layer of your teeth lives right below the enamel. The majority of the tooth structure is made up of dentin and it is very porous, so it absorbs materials very easily. Stains that seep deeply into this layer, create more permanent dark marks on teeth. Whitening products could remove stains from this layer, although it is more difficult.
  • Root and Pulp—These parts of your teeth aren’t susceptible to staining, but they are very sensitive. When you have whitening treatment, you may experience a little bit of sensitivity for a while because all layers of your teeth are affected by the bleaching products.

Should you get professional teeth whitening?

understanding the makeup of the tooth structure helps us to understand how stains affect teeth on a molecular level, so you can understand why it’s so important to get your cosmetic treatments from a qualified and reliable dentist. At-home whitening solutions may provide some shine, but they will not be able to penetrate the layers of your teeth and offer true, lasting results.

If you’re interested in what professional teeth whitening can do for you, give JJS Dentistry a call!

Can I get teeth whitening if I have sensitive teeth?

Can I get teeth whitening if I have sensitive teeth?

Can I get teeth whitening if I have sensitive teeth?

Teeth whitening is an excellent option for individuals who want to brighten their smile, but is it safe for people with tooth sensitivity?

The short answer is yes. As long as you visit your dentist before starting any whitening treatment, you can safely get rid of discolouration, even if you have sensitive teeth.

Let’s take a look at the basics of teeth whitening, and how to get it done safely.

Why do teeth get sensitive after teeth whitening?

Tooth whitening contains bleaching gels. During in-office teeth whitening, bleach causes some patients teeth sensitivity for 1-2 days after treatment. This is because the whitening agent penetrates the enamel, exposing some nerve endings close to the surface.

Luckily, whitening technology is getting smarter by the day. At JJS Dentistry, we use an advanced whitening treatment called Zoom! Teeth whitening. Zoom! Teeth whitening contains a pH booster, meaning it’s completely safe for your teeth. The gels contain amorphous calcium phosphate, sodium fluoride and potassium nitrate to help desensitize and remineralize the teeth during the bleaching process.

Which oral problems must be fixed before teeth whitening?

If you have gum disease, your dentist will need to treat the gum disease, and teeth whitening can only be done when the gums are fully healed. Also, if you have other dental problems such as cavities, your dentist will recommend that you get fillings before starting a whitening treatment.

If you have particularly sensitive teeth, we may suggest using a fluoride gel or rinse, or strong fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your teeth. There are also in-office treatments that can help with sensitivity, such as fluoride varnishes or plastic resins.

Fortunately, many dental problems are completely treatable. Once your dentist feels your teeth are in a better condition, chances are, you’ll get the green light to pursue your perfect smile.

Get whitening from a dental professional

Various clinical studies and research show that teeth whitening done under the supervision of a dentist is generally safe. Ideally, you should choose a dentist that has extensive experience with the procedure. Dental experts know best how the procedure works.

At JJS Dentistry, we can also guide you through the entire process from start to finish. In addition, we offer you plenty of information and make sure your teeth are suitable for treatment beforehand.

During the procedure, Dr JJ Serfontein applies an appliance that protects and covers the gums around the teeth. This makes the process even safer.

Tips for reducing sensitivity after teeth whitening

  • After your treatment, use a prescribed toothpaste and/or gel specifically designed for sensitive teeth. In most cases, the sensitivity will last up to 48 hours – you can go back to your regular toothpaste after this period.
  • Be gentle when brushing your teeth. Use a soft-bristled brush and lukewarm water instead of cold water to ease sensitive teeth. We also recommend that you leave the toothpaste in your mouth for a few minutes after you’ve finished brushing to give it some extra time to work.
  • For a few days after your treatment, try to avoid very hot and very cold drinks. We also recommend trying to avoid drinks like coffee and tea to prevent staining.
  • You can drink from a straw, as this makes the liquid bypass your teeth, and helps prevent sensitivity.

So there you have it. Even if you have sensitive teeth, chances are you don’t have to settle for those unsightly stains. In fact, with the guidance of a Dentist in Cape Town, you can make your teeth instantly whiter and brighter. A gorgeous smile can be a confidence booster and a great way to get noticed, so get your brand new smile today!

Zoom! Whitening has great benefits!

A bright, beautiful smile can make you look years younger, and yellow or stained teeth can significantly age you. You may use toothpaste and kits that contain whitening agents, but the effects tend to be temporary. This is why JJS Dentistry offers Zoom!® whitening at the Waterway House practice.

Zoom!® Teeth Whitening

The Zoom!® Whitening system is designed to make your teeth noticeably whiter! Zoom!® whitening has minimal irritation and typically takes only ONE, hour-long session to accomplish stunning results. The procedure is done by applying a unique bleaching solution to the surfaces of the teeth, and then exposing it to a specialized Zoom!® light to activate the treatment.

Do Results Last?

Your brightened smile can typically last between twelve and eighteen months. But you should maintain your proper oral hygiene routine and refrain from activities that stain the teeth, such as smoking and drinking coffee, sodas and red wine. By staying away from staining agents and maintaining proper oral health, you’ll ensure your results last for as long as possible.

Bust all negative stereotypes and get the best dental care

Your dental care experience depends on the quality of service and being comfortable. Untrue stereotypes relating to the dental industry and oral care can cripple your experience. When you have a cavity, one may tell you to just go to the dentist. But it might not be that simple for some people. Although dentists recommend that everyone visits the dentist twice a year for a checkup and cleaning. Many people avoid making an appointment due to what they have heard or read or a bad experience.

There are lots of misconceptions about dentists and dentistry that prevent people from getting the quality care that they need. But the truth is most of these misconceptions are very untrue and are based on negative stereotypes. There are common stereotypes about going to the dentist that isn’t always true.

For example, one stereotype is that dental treatments hurt, which is a very misinformed idea. Standard procedures such as regular dental cleaning shouldn’t be a painful experience, even if your teeth aren’t in great shape. In the case of a deep cavity filling or a tooth extraction, your dentist will numb the area so that you do not go through unnecessary pain. This numbing allows you to get your teeth worked on without feeling the pain. An experienced dentist or dental hygienist will know how to avoid causing pain, and they’ll listen to you if you tell them that something hurts.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the dentists will judge you based on the state of your teeth. But the truth is, your dentist is a highly-trained medical professional who wants to help you, not criticise you. Their job is to ensure that you walk about with a good outcome and that you remain healthy. Throughout their careers, they’ve witnessed a wide variety of dental issues, so nothing should surprise them anymore. So they understand that most people don’t have perfect dental hygiene habits.

If you fear being criticised, you probably have dental anxiety, which is typical for many people. Just know that your appointment should be comfortable and stress-free, so put for health above any stereotypes. Negative stereotypes associated with dentists are usually not right, but you can also speak to your dentist about your concerns, and you both can come up with a plan to make the visit as comfortable as possible.

Go to the dentist. It is an essential part of keeping your teeth clean and healthy. Dentists are there to help you and provide support. If something needs to be fixed, they are there for you and make things comfortable. There is no need to be afraid.

Is charcoal toothpaste worth the risks?

There are so many at-home tricks, including charcoal toothpaste to help whiten teeth. The disadvantage of many of these solutions can carry long term consequences. The main problem with charcoal is the risk of injection. Ingesting charcoal has long been used to help relieve gas and other digestive issues. It is also used to pump the stomach of people who have ingested certain deadly poisons or drugs since the charcoal stops the toxins from reaching the bloodstream through the gut.

With just this information, you can tell how powerful the finely processed activated charcoal into can be. For this reason, activated charcoal one it’s own is often too abrasive for using to brush your teeth daily because as it wears away the natural enamel. What’s worse, if you’re not careful, which is often the case with at-home remedies, the dark charcoal paste can leave the teeth looking grey and dull if it isn’t wholly brushed off. The extra scrubbing needed to get rid of the discolouration entirely could cause excess wear and tear on your enamel. The charcoal particles can also get caught up in the gums and irritate the gums causing long term dental problems.

The increasingly popular charcoal products often contain no fluoride. The role of fluoride is to protect your teeth from abrasion when brushing your teeth every day. Although there is no scientific evidence to back up the claims that they whiten and brighten your teeth, dental products with activated charcoal as the main ingredient are making big sales. Excessive brushing with these products can do more harm than good.

It is better to seek a dental professional for advice on cleaning and whitening teeth safely. We also need to remember that every person is different. Seeking professional help gives you the option to customise your experience so that you get the best treatment that considers your desired outcome together with the state of your overall health status. Concerns about staining or discoloured teeth might be solved by a change in diet and improvements in oral hygiene.

With all that said, your best bet is to do your dental checkups and cleanings regularly, quit smoking if you smoke, and reduce or eliminate any other habits that can stain teeth. Opt for regular toothpaste with fluoride, floss or interdental brushes to maintain good oral hygiene and a bright, healthy smile.

You can have the perfect smile

When we talk about the perfect smile, we are referring to a beautiful smile that lights up a room and transforms your face. Sometimes we have small imperfections that prevent us from having the smile we desire. Your teeth aren’t the only problem, it’s the full package; it could be as a result of staining from coffee or teeth that are not uniform. Whatever it is, it can most likely be corrected.

There are minor and major procedures and treatments you can get from the dentist’s office that will elevate your smile. When you have a better smile, you feel more confident and people will notice it. Confidence goes a long way in your social and professional life. You become less shy and self-conscious which helps you focus on becoming the best you in all aspects of your life.

Self-care is critical in maintaining the perfect smile

It is important to take care of yourself in every way. Some things may seem like fun initially but can cause you more harm. Dangerous behaviour should be avoided and high-risk sports should be practised with caution and the right sports gear. You only get your adult teeth once. Safety comes first during physical activities to avoid knocking out or chipping your teeth.

In the long run, healthy teeth will lead to the best smile. You should never be in a position where you have neglected to care for your teeth and overall oral health. Ensure that you are using the best toothbrush, floss and toothpaste for you. Take time out to clean your teeth properly and have an in-office deep clean to avoid gum diseases and to treat any minor complications before they worsen.

A smile makeover this the ultimate improvement to your smile. It is a journey to a perfect smile specially designed for you. It is the process of improving the appearance of your smile through one or more cosmetic dentistry procedures.

Celebrity Beauty Secrets

Teeth whitening is one of the best-kept beauty secrets in the world – it’s inexpensive, painless and will have you looking like a movie star in under an hour with no lasting effects except for a white, bright smile.

Having a clean, straight smile enhances not just your self-confidence, but also your romantic and professional opportunities.

Walking into a meeting, date or event is much easier when your smile is white, bright and beautiful. Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures Cape Town

Teeth Whitening

Once of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures. Today there are numerous teeth-whitening options available, and determining which will be the best for your smile will depend on the amount of whitening you need and how much you are willing to spend to get it.

Veneers

Dental veneers are a form of cosmetic dentistry in which a shell or layer of tooth-colored porcelain or composite is placed over the facial surfaces of your teeth to correct worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing, discoloration and chips or cracks.

Dental Implants

A permanent alternative to removable dentures for replacing missing teeth. Implants are strong and stable, as they are rooted into the jaw bone. They also look and feel like your natural teeth.

Bonding

We aim to restore broken, chipped, mishapen, partially decayed or discolored teeth. With dental bonding, a composite material that resembles your natural tooth color is sculpted into place, then shaped and hardened using UV light or laser.

Crowns

Dental crowns are used to cover and protect teeth which are weak. It is also used to restore a broken tooth or hold a bridge in place.

3 ways to Brighter, Whiter Teeth

The first thing that people notice when you speak while facing them, is your teeth. Immediately, the state of your oral health becomes judged by the colour of your teeth. However fair or unfair that may be. Teeth can become stained in many ways. Even if you practice immaculate oral hygiene, your teeth can still become stained by tea, coffee, wine and tobacco products. Here are three ways in which you can obtain – and maintain – brighter, whiter teeth.

1.    Brush your teeth properly, twice a day

For many years, dentists have recommended that patients brush their teeth at least twice a day, ideally after meals. The best way to ensure that you are spending enough time brushing each tooth would be to divide your mouth into quadrants and spend 30 seconds brushing each quadrant. Brush your teeth in a gentle circular motion, and only use a toothbrush with soft bristles that won’t damage your gums or tooth enamel.

2.    Whitening treatments

The teeth whitening industry is at an all-time high, with products ranging from special toothpastes to whitening strips that bleach your teeth while you carry on with your daily activities. For mild discolouration, there are a myriad of over the counter whitening products available to you. However, for more severe discolouration or stains, professional teeth whitening treatments may be the best solution for you.

3.    Cosmetic dental treatments

If your teeth are severely stained, decayed, or if the tooth enamel is thin enough to expose the underlying dentin, simple teeth whitening treatments might not be effective enough to give you the desired whiter smile. In these cases, the best option would be cosmetic dental treatments such as veneers or lumineers. These treatments will provide you with an instantly brighter and whiter smile.
