Dental Implants: Preparing for your Consultation
Whether you’ve lost a single tooth or multiple teeth, you have probably considered getting dental implants. Dental implants allow us to replace the roots of your missing teeth, and many patients can benefit from this advanced treatment method. Before you schedule your consultation for dental implants, you should take the time to understand what makes you a good candidate for implants and what questions you should ask your dentist before you start.
Am I a good candidate for dental implants?
There have been considerable developments in both the materials used to make dental implants and the surgical methods used to place them, so more patients than ever before can receive dental implant supported tooth replacement. However, candidates should meet the following criteria:
- Good oral health
- Good overall health
- Approval from your medical physicians to have minor surgery
- No past negative experiences during surgical treatment
- Sufficient jawbone density and enough gum tissue volume to support an implant
- Enough time to dedicate to this advanced treatment plan
What to expect during implant consultation
During your initial consultation, you can to discuss all of the details associated with your dental implant plan. Dr Serfontein will evaluate the current state of your oral health, take some digital x-rays and ask you a few questions about your overall health and any past surgeries. These steps will help Dr Serfontien understand your unique situation and determine whether implants are the best option for you. This appointment is also a good opportunity for you to ask questions and get an understanding of the process and procedures. Some questions you should ask Dr Serfontein during your dental implant consultation include:
- Am I a candidate for dental implants?
- Are all of the procedures performed here, at Waterway House?
- Can you show me some of your previous implant cases?
- Should I stop taking any prescription medications before treatment?
- How much do dental implants cost?
- How long will the entire process take?
- Are there any other treatment options you recommend?
Moving forward with Implants
If you’re ready to start the journey to replace your missing teeth with a fixed, permanent solution, the team at JJS Dentistry is here to assist. Simply call our Waterway House practice and schedule your initial consultation. Once you’re ready to proceed with the treatment, your procedures will be scheduled.
Implants are typically placed over 2 or 3 procedures – with a few months in between the first and second. The first procedure involves fusing a titanium post to the jawbone. Time is then taken for the area to heal before an abutment and crown are placed on top of the post.
The entire process does take a few months to complete, but it is well worth the wait to have a fixed, permanent synthetic tooth that looks and acts just like a natural tooth with no slipping or sliding.
