Eliminating Bad Breath

Everyone has had halitosis – the medical term for bad breath – at some point or another, but for some people, halitosis is a persistent problem. It is much easier to spot halitosis in others than it is in yourself. If you are unsure about the state of your breath, simply lick the back of your hand and give it a sniff.   • Brush twice a day and floss daily to clean your mouth and remove food particles that may be trapped between your teeth, as the food could turn stale and smell foul.
  • Remember to brush the surface of your tongue.
  • Stop your mouth from going dry by chewing sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva flow. A dry mouth can lead to foul-smelling breath.
  • Quit smoking. Smoking not only causes bad breath, but it also stains your teeth and could cause a myriad of other oral health problems.
  • Rinse your mouth with water after eating or snacking if you are unable to brush.
  • Snack on apples, pears, carrots, celeries and cucumbers. These snacks encourage production of saliva.
  • Eat fruits that are rich in Vitamin C, like berries and guavas, as this help you fight gum diseases and gingivitis which cause bad breath.
  • Use alcohol-free mouthwash, as alcohol can dry and irritate your mouth.
  • Visit your dentist at least twice a year for check-ups and dental cleanings.
