What are the Layers of Teeth?
- Enamel—The enamel layer is the outermost layer of your teeth. It’s one of the hardest substances that your body makes, and it works to protect the sensitive inner layers of your teeth. Enamel is the first layer that absorbs stains.
- Dentin—The dentin layer of your teeth lives right below the enamel. The majority of the tooth structure is made up of dentin and it is very porous, so it absorbs materials very easily. Stains that seep deeply into this layer, create more permanent dark marks on teeth. Whitening products could remove stains from this layer, although it is more difficult.
- Root and Pulp—These parts of your teeth aren’t susceptible to staining, but they are very sensitive. When you have whitening treatment, you may experience a little bit of sensitivity for a while because all layers of your teeth are affected by the bleaching products.
